🍲 It’s October 1, which means we have officially entered soup season. Never mind that it’s still over 80 degrees in South Carolina.

And while this latest Murdaugh story has some very familiar ingredients, there’s a new twist simmering in Murdaugh 2.0.

⚖️ This week, The Post and Courier reported that Yemassee Police Chief Greg Alexander is under State Grand Jury investigation over allegations that he transported the Murdaugh murder weapons and bloody clothing to his police station after Maggie and Paul Murdaugh were killed on June 7, 2021.

@mandy_matney and I have been reporting on Alexander’s ties to Alex Murdaugh for years. And from the beginning, there have been major unanswered questions about Alexander’s movements that night, including why he was at Moselle in the first place.

Alex’s younger brother tried to explain some of that during the 2023 murder trial. Instead, his testimony left us with even more questions.

☀️ So yes, it’s encouraging to see SLED and the Attorney General’s Office examining this. But the timing of this news is raising another set of questions for us.

Why is this information coming out now? Who benefits from these headlines roughly six months before Alex’s next trial? And what role, if any, does Team Murdaugh have in how this story became public? 🤔

Because when it comes to this case, we’ve learned not to look only at what is being said. We also look at who is saying it, when they’re saying it and why.

We’ll get into more of the latest Murdaugh filings in Part Two. And we’re saving all things Judge Carmen Mullen for next week.

Anyone else feel like we’re back in 2022? 🙃

@mandy_matney and I are joined again by Atlanta attorney Noah Pines for @cojpod 198, and somehow we’re right back in the thick of South Carolina’s judicial accountability problems.

Today, Judge Carmen Mullen is before the Commission on Judicial Conduct in a rare public disciplinary hearing. And no, this isn’t about the Satterfield settlement.

It’s about that night in 2017 when Mullen was recorded talking to law enforcement about getting a man arrested in his own home, questioning what charges could be found against him and suggesting she could sign a warrant.

We were not permitted to livestream the hearing, but we’ll have updates for you soon. ⚖️

In this episode, Mandy, Noah and I break down the dash-cam audio, how South Carolina’s judicial disciplinary process actually works and why accountability for judges can look VERY different just across the border in Georgia.

☀️ In her official response to the Office of Disciplinary Counsel, Judge Carmen Mullen says she was simply a concerned citizen trying to help a man she believed was mentally ill and in need of help.

But in Part 2 of True Sunlight 166, @mandy_matney and I play the recording from that December 2017 night in Port Royal Plantation so you can hear Judge Mullen’s own words for yourself.

On the recording, Mullen tells deputies she has sentenced Ernie “the Attorney” before. She questions whether he has a lease, says she told the homeowner to press charges, and then appears to introduce herself to that homeowner for the first time.

She says, “you gotta get rid of him” and asks officers to “find some charges.” According to the police report, Mullen also suggested she could sign a warrant herself. ✍️

🏛️ Mandy and I also dig into a threat-filled lawsuit against Ernie that Mullen had dismissed months earlier, along with the curious role of Hilton Head real estate agent Moose Rini, whose name keeps surfacing in police reports, trial transcripts and sentencing memoranda connected to this story.

#ICYMI - ☀️ 💛 For years, @mandy_matney and I have been asking the same question: When would South Carolina’s Office of Disciplinary Counsel and Commission on Judicial Conduct take action on the ethics complaints involving 14th Circuit Court Judge Carmen Tevis Mullen?

Now we have a date.

📅 Sept. 29, 2026 at 10 a.m. ET
📍 Columbia, South Carolina

⚖️ Judge Mullen is scheduled to appear before the Commission on Judicial Conduct to answer at least four counts of alleged judicial misconduct connected to a 2017 tenant dispute in her gated Hilton Head Island neighborhood.

According to a police report, Mullen wanted a man known as “Ernie the Attorney” arrested, suggested officers search him for probable cause and indicated she could sign a warrant on the spot.

Mullen has said her concern was getting Ernie mental health care.
