What an incredible weekend!

My wife asked if I wanted to sneak away for a backpacking/hunting trip, and of course I jumped at the opportunity.

Nana agreed to watch the kids, so we loaded up and headed out Friday afternoon. The original plan changed pretty quickly when road construction and washed-out roads kept us from getting to the spot I had picked.

A quick look at onX and we had Plan B.

We made it to the trailhead late Friday night, slept there, and headed into the backcountry Saturday morning. The hike to camp was a little farther—and a lot more uphill—than I anticipated, but we made it in early afternoon, got camp set up, and waited for the evening glassing session.

From camp, we had another half-mile hike to our glassing knob. After looking over one side of the mountain, we moved to the other side and almost immediately I spotted a bear.

Then it was a mad dash to get the rifle and camera set up.

The bear was about 130 yards away on a steep downhill angle, and I had to reposition a couple of times before I could get steady.

One shot.

The bear rolled down the hill into some brush, and we never saw him get back up.

We made our way down, took some pictures, quartered the bear right there on the side of the mountain, and packed the meat back to camp before calling it a night.

The next morning we started the long hike back to the rig. Along the way we even found a grouse, and my wife was able to get it!

Now we’re back home with sore bodies, full freezers, and happy hearts.

These are the weekends I’ll remember.

Took Thor out to check zero!

This rifle was built by Mountain Forged and is the most accurate and hardest hitting rifle I have ever shot!

It’s been responsible for putting down 7 animals in the past two years!

My confidence with it is as high as ever!

Can’t wait to get him back into the woods!

No I am not an expert!

Idaho hunting season means one more item on the preseason checklist—taking down the cellular trail cameras.

These cameras have worked great for me over the last two years. I’ve left them out year-round, and with the addition of a solar battery pack, they’ve just kept running.

But with Idaho’s new rule prohibiting the use of cellular trail cameras during hunting season, it’s time to pull them down and go back to doing things the old-fashioned way.

Honestly, I don’t hate it. Less real-time information, more scouting, more time in the woods, and a little more mystery when opening morning rolls around.
