Before the start of this missions trip, I was in a place in my life where I was feeling extremely discouraged and alone. I was struggling with believing the misconception that I needed to do everything right and “Jesus-like” in order to win God’s love and approval.

I went on the missions trip to El Salvador without even praying about it before hand, since going on missions trip was something I always just did. But then, on the third day of the trip, I got really sick. So sick that I was lying on the floor of one of the rooms, trying not to throw up.

And then a random El Salvadorian lady, who I had never before talked to, came up to me and started praying over me in Spanish as she put her hand on my stomach. And almost instantly, my feelings of nausea went away. And I knew in that moment that through prayer, the Holy Spirit had healed me, and I started crying.

The previous day one of my leaders, Ben Cura, had told me a story about getting sick on a missions trip and being forced to stay in the hotel room while the rest of his team was out, serving. Similarly to my story, he was struggling to realize that we can’t win God’s love through our works, and through his sickness God taught him that He loves us whether or not we go on missions trips. It is literally impossible to win God’s approval simply through our works and actions.

As I laid on the floor, being comforted by the El Salvadorian lady, Esme, I thought back to Ben’s story and was blown away. Not only was God teaching me the same thing as Ben, but in the same way. And I could literally feel God’s presence and love in the room as Esme laid with me on the ground, stroked my hair, and prayed over me lovingly in Spanish.

So for those of you reading this, I want to encourage you and remind you that Jesus loves you!!!! He doesn’t love you because you go on missions trips or because you go to church. He loves you because you are his son and daughter in Christ. ❤️
