Alabama Girls State, you have changed my life. To my city girls, I have learned so much from you all, and I am so grateful to have created such strong friendships with all 25 of you guys after just six short days. I am forever grateful, and I can’t wait to meet again. 🩵🩵

Today is World IBD (inflammatory bowel disease) Day. Four and a half years ago I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. At my sickest I had to stay at home or hospital and receive treatments. Many of those medications failed, and I remained steroid dependent which was devastating for my body. Throughout everything happening there was one thing that remained constant: dance. I would do everything in my power to come to classes and competitions. I never once missed a performance. My body hated me for it, but dance gave me hope. I lost a lot of muscle strength and stamina needed to thrive in the dance world, but I kept pushing nonetheless. Dance is also an amazing therapy and coping mechanism for all of the mental health struggles associated with chronic illness. Being sick was devastating, but all of that went away once I got to perform or just improve in an empty studio. IBD is chronic, and currently, there is no cure. I still deal with symptoms despite being in remission. The healing journey has been long, but I am so proud of how far I’ve come. It is such a blessing to have an able body to express the art of dance. This post is meant to spread awareness about IBD and to share my love for dance and the healing powers it has 🤗
