On my Instagram, I’m always sharing Scripture, the joy, and the fruit that comes from my walk with God.

Something I don’t share as often is the cost. The suffering. The refinement. The trials and tribulations.

I share the answered prayers and the beautiful things God is doing, and I praise Him for all of it. But I also want to be honest that following Christ isn’t always as easy as it may look on Instagram. BEFORE YOU KEEP READING—every bit of it is worth it. I give all glory to God that He gives me the strength to keep going and continue growing in my relationship with Him.

Jesus calls us to deny ourselves and count the cost. For me, that sometimes looks like self-control. I can’t always say or do whatever I want. Sometimes I don’t feel like opening my Bible. Sometimes I want to lash out, return to my old ways, or get mad at God when my plans don’t work out. My flesh wants to win.

And this isn’t a “woe is me.” It’s a reality check. Following Christ costs something.

Sometimes God calls me into deeper refinement, surrender, and devotion. That can mean giving up time, relationships, habits, comfort, and parts of myself I want to hold onto. You can’t put new wine into old wineskins. Sometimes the old has to be shed.

And in the suffering, there is SO much joy. Joy in knowing He is refining me, using me, and making me more like Him.

I’m not perfect. It doesn’t always look like a cute coffee and Bible study. Sometimes it looks like pouring myself out to Him, praying for repentance, laying on the floor crying out to Him when I don’t have the words.

If there is anything good in my life, it is because of God—not because I have it all together.

My job. My friendships. My joy. My devotion. My discipline. My growth. Everything. It is all because of Him.

Following Jesus isn’t effortless or perfect. There is a cost to surrender, a process of refinement, and days of choosing obedience. But through it all, I choose Him. My life will never be the same. by @ellacmay05

Again a place of impact, it is beautiful to see others serve, love, grow in the Lord. This trip reminds me that it is never us but Him, and I’m blessed to be a vessel. I am fully convinced my God is real, cares for us, and loves us deeply. Thank you Father, all the glory belongs to you. by @ellacmay05

Looking back on this past year, my heart is FULL of gratitude. First, the growth in my life and the change of direction I have chosen. Then the blessings of people, experiences, and lessons the Lord has placed in my life. I’m forever filled with the JOY that comes from Him.
