me vs. the Statue of Liberty🗽#ad

Saturday in Holcomb Valley, I set a little challenge for myself: climb enough routes to match or beat the height of the Statue of Liberty (305 ft), and track it all using the climb elevation gain stat on my @corosglobal Apex 4.

I checked my watch after each pitch to see how close I was, passed the statue after pitch 5, then squeezed in one more route I had my eye on. My final total was 390 feet of elevation gain (the sum of my 6 individual pitches plus a little extra scrambling I did), 85 feet more than Lady Liberty.

Glad I can now tell my kids I climbed the Statue of Liberty 😂

What music gets me up the wall??

While Alex Honnold loves his rock, I love…my wubz 😂

and I listen to my favorite artists (a mix of ZD, Subtronics, Rezz, and Tape b) almost every time I climb. I find it’s much easier to push harder with a good playlist 😌

side note: I CANNOT wait to get back to El Potrero Chico this year. These clips are from our last trip there; it may be one of my favorite places I’ve ever climbed.

POV: you escape California’s heat wave in Big Bear

Holcomb has quickly become one of my favorite easily accessible crags from San Diego + LA! And when we saw the weather was lovely up there amidst this heat wave, we knew we had to go 🤝

I ended up getting in more than expected, with my @corosglobal watch letting me know I climbed 7 routes on Saturday, and 4 on Sunday. I even found a project (Road Crew, 12.a), that I’m excited to work on. What a great way to start off fall season :)

3 tips for your slab climbing ⬇️

1) Keep your weight over your feet, and trust the feet you’re using! Leaning into the wall actually works against you…it reduces the friction holding you there in the first place.

2) Move slow. It’s not about speed, it’s about control. Hesitation and rushing are usually what cause a slip!

3) Smear, don’t edge (and keep your heels down). Dropping your heels increases the surface area of your shoe in contact with the rock, which means more friction and more stability.

Slab is less about strength and more about trusting the technique. Took me a while to actually believe that though 😂

Another day clipping on slippery slabby rock 🙂‍↔️

This weekend we explored monkeyface falls, and I really enjoyed ‘Dark Ritual, 5.10b’ (the slabby climb I’m on here which had tons of fun movement).

According to my @corosglobal apex 4 watch, I got 5 stellar routes in yesterday, and only had to walk a 1/4 of a mile to get to them. It’s not everyday that’s the case 😂 I still have more fun clips to share showing off the crags’ highlight (climbing with waterfalls?!), and will most definitely be coming back 🤝

Climbing gear you need as you progress ⬇️

Gym climbing
-Harness
-gri gri
-chalk bag
-shoes (I primarily wear @ocun.climbing now)

Sport climbing
-helmet (love my @petzl_official, safety first 🤝)
-QuickDraws (I use my trusted @blackdiamond ones)
-a PAS, third hand, and ATC for cleaning gear and getting off routes
-a rope

Treating yourself
-smart watch (I use my @corosglobal Apex 4 and it’s great for climbing)
-crack gloves
-belay goggles (they save your neck over time)

Trad climbing
-a whole trad rack (or two)
-comfier shoes for longer days
*a rack has too many individual pieces of gear to get into here, will talk about them separately!

While this is definitely not EVERYTHING you will need, I hope it provides a general roadmap for you :)
