For the best Ella itinerary, you’ll fill your days very quickly: hikes, train tracks, viewpoints, cafés, waterfalls and little detours that turn into full-on mini adventures.

And that’s the best way to explore Ella!

But, if you only have one adventure day in Ella, Sri Lanka, this is how I’d spend it.

⭐ start early with Ella Rock ⭐ add the Forest Monastery for something quieter ⭐ leave space for natural pools, cafés or a railway walk ⭐ don’t cram too much into one day

For me, I’d start with Ella Rock while it’s still cool. It’s one of the best views in Ella, and it feels much better when you’re not hiking in the heat of the day.

After that, I’d continue to the Forest Monastery, which ended up being one of my favourite unexpected stops.

I sat with a monk there for around 40 minutes talking about life and death, which was definitely not on my original itinerary.

Then, if you still have energy, you could add the natural pools near AMBA Estate, a café stop, or a slower railway walk.

My biggest tip: The key is not trying to do every single thing in Ella in one day!

Make it adventurous, but still leave space for the little moments.

Is Demodara Railway Loop worth adding to your Ella itinerary?

Honestly, yes, but only if you have enough time and you enjoy the quieter buts and nature.

⭐ best if you’re already visiting Nine Arch Bridge ⭐ a lovely quieter walk away from the crowds ⭐ easy to pair with a train ride back to Ella ⭐ not essential if you only have one rushed day

For me, Demodara wasn’t one of those huge “wow” attractions. It wasn’t dramatic like Ella Rock or iconic like Nine Arch Bridge.

But I still really enjoyed it.

It felt slower, greener and more local; one of those little add-ons that gives you a different feel for Ella beyond the main tourist spots.

So would I go out of my way for it? Probably not if I only had one day.

But if you’ve got two days in Ella and want something a little more offbeat, I think it’s worth adding.

If you’re going to Sri Lanka, don’t visit Nine Arch Bridge without knowing this 👇

Nine Arch Bridge is beautiful… but it can get busy very quickly.

Don’t overpay for getting to Nine Arch Bridge, some tuk tuks charge too much and take longer route. A better options is to walk 30-40 mins or rent a scooter.

I walked there from Ella along the train tracks, which took me about an hour (although I managed to take a tiny accidental detour at the start, because apparently I can’t resist making simple things slightly more chaotic — ask my friends)

Best time early morning - less people, better photos and aim for the 9:30 am train. If you want a quieter visit, I’d go earlier than I did, ideally before 8am.

And if you’re going for photos, try to time your visit with a train rather than just turning up randomly!

My biggest tip is not to rush off straight after.

Most people visit the bridge and head back, but you can keep walking along the tracks towards Demodara for a much quieter, more offbeat little adventure.
