I. moving toward home (always a voice/siempre una voz series)2025-20266.5 x 6.5 inchesFabric, vellum, thread, sharpie, cardstock, cardboard, photographyJune Jordan wrote “Moving Towards Home” in 1982 after the massacre of Palestinians in the Sabra + Shatila refugee camps. Jordan acknowledges the Palestinian struggle for liberation as her own. This book accompanied by the playlist “moving toward home,” part of my “always a voice/siempre una voz” series honors women artists who do the same. The songs, this poetry, pushed me to learn more about our collective struggles, and create more, uplifting and searching for solutions to rectify it. From listening to Miriam Makeba, I learned about resistance against apartheid in South Africa. I open the playlist and book with Sade “Pearls” from annoyance of the song being paired with beauty videos byway of TikTok. I learned about the 1992 Somali famine that Sade references in the song. The book shares my thoughts and background knowledge from these musicians acknowledging that music is information.This playlist series is also an invitation to read poetry and listen to music about resistance, while surrounding our lives around it. It is also an invitation to listen to non-Western music, and learn languages beside your own. There is always a voice in between the lines, sometimes needing translation, and beyond borders. The images are printed on vellum. The text is written with silver sharpie on vellum. where the love is01: 3/26/24, Mexico City, celebrating my birthday with Brieana.02: excerpt “Watching,” 1996 from the artist book “Betye Saar: Heart of a Wanderer.” I was only able to receive this book by way of Lauren. I’ve enjoyed reading about Betye’s traveling, collecting, writing & drawing rituals, receiving of the world, and sketch books. Informed as human & artist.03: Lavender tulips (my favorite color & flower) rest in a vase gifted to me by family, surrounded by my favorite kitchen corner, my tea corner.04: Being with the artwork from “From the Ground Up” one last time before shipment. I never talked about how deeply I felt about this show publicly, but the love is there.05: Sometimes I go back to these photos of Sam Gilliam’s exhibition “Sam Gilliam: Last Five Years” at David Kordansky Gallery in 2024 when I’m working on my paintings. 06: At the Memoryhaus with SunXochitl and Ana last Summer, feasting and listening to good music.07: Went to The Pit with Austyn and I can’t stop thinking about Soleé Darrell’s paintings…08: Brieana’s last night with me in Mexico City (2024)09: Mustafa the Poet performing “I’ll Go Anywhere.” This song reminds me of my relationship with God, how it grows with age. My old friend, friend of my mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and so on, draw me closer. Draw me nearer.10: Brieana11: Chickpeas, avocado, homemade Caesar dressing, and romaine lettuce inspired by a salad a friend made me.Experiences with people & places. James Baldwin, I Am Not Your Negro. (Raoul Peck, 2016)I’m terrified at the moral apathy, the death of the heart, which is happening in my country. These people have deluded themselves for so long that they really don’t think I’m human. I base this on their conduct, not on what they say. And this means they have become, in themselves moral monsters. by @elleinvd
