Kitty in their studio

I photographed Kitty for my on going photo series documenting queer individuals of the North East. Each portrait follows a conversation as well as highlighting thoughts and creative practice. It started 4 years ago as an exploration of what queerness means, and now what it means to exist as a queer person in the North-East.

Kitty - ‘I’m an artist and researcher based in Newcastle. Working across sculpture, installation, moving-image, sound and socially engaged practice, I explore how public spaces are designed, organised and controlled to produce and uphold dominant systems of power.

As a queer and disabled artist, I’m particularly interested in the ways queer and crip bodies, behaviours and forms of navigation disrupt streamlined ideals of public space. My work pays attention to moments of interruption, and misalignment, looking at what these encounters can reveal about how space is structured and how it might be inhabited differently.

Newcastle is a weird city; its infrastructures, architectures and particular spatial glitches lend themselves to queer and crip readings. Being part of both Newcastle’s creative and queer communities is important to me, and these communities have shaped my practice and the way I work.’

Kitty is a dear friend of mine and a huge inspiration in my life and creative career. They have taught me how to regularly say ‘fuck it’ and ‘do what makes you happy.’

Below some words from both carrying on the conversation of Newcastle as a queer sanctuary -

‘Growing up in small conservative towns meant we couldn’t fully engage in the queer community because there wasn’t one, and that can be so isolating. Moving away from your home town can be scary but it gives you a sense of freedom, where you can begin to learn and explore who you are and meet new people. After meeting each other in 2023 and meeting such a great group of queer people we have recognised that Newcastle is our home now, we have such a sense of belonging within the community and we feel so much joy to be here. It’s funny how we both grew up over 1000 miles apart in different countries but somehow met in Newcastle by chance is kinda cool.’ by @ellendixxon
