Last week, I got the chance to see MOMA’s newest exhibition called The Surrealist Book: Tomorrow Lives in Mirrors, featuring artists and writers like Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, and Toyen.

One of my favorite experimental films is called “Dreams That Money Can Buy,” (1947) that included many artists like Max Ernst, Man Ray, and Marcel Duchamp.

So, I was not surprised this exhibition included so many of Max Ernst, Man Ray, and Marcel Duchamp’s works. As an aspiring poet, what completely took me by surprise is the poetry books. Here I am, working on my next poetry zine called “Dolly Shot,” feeling utterly uninspired and struggling to just… write. But I was surrounded by books full of “automatic” poetry, a method of writing that lets the mind subconsciously dictate the words flowing onto the page. A sign, perhaps?

If I were to represent Surrealism in one piece of work– I’ll choose this piece created by Max Ernst in slide 4 (1931). He created a collage, a “collaboration” as he likes to call it, a hodgepodge of cut up pictures of his fellow surrealist artists like Man Ray and Salvador Dali.

I really hope you get to check it out (it’s open now!) and if you do, let me know if you enjoyed Man Ray’s technique of superimposition on film or Salvador Dali’s book, “La Femme Visible”.

Thank you to Kelly and @litclub.nyc for this amazing opportunity to be one of the first to see this exhibition!
