Someone Can Be Absolutely Certain...and Completely Wrong.

A few months ago, I found myself in disagreement with a contractor.
A custom installation wasn't functioning the way it should. I knew something wasn't right. It wasn't practical. It didn't work the way it was intended. In my opinion, it wasn't even safe.

When I raised my concerns, I expected a conversation about possible solutions. Instead, I was told why I was wrong.

I was told everything had been done correctly. I was told that if they had to do it again, they'd do it exactly the same way. The explanation never changed. Only the certainty with which it was delivered.

After enough conversations, I caught myself wondering, Am I missing something?

Looking back, it felt like the conversation had stopped being about solving the problem. It had become about convincing me there wasn't one.

Once I recognized that, everything became much clearer.
That's exactly why this tactic can be so effective. When someone repeats the same message often enough, and with enough confidence, we begin to question our own judgment instead of questioning their argument. So I stepped back.

I stopped listening to how confidently the position was being defended and started looking only at the facts. I asked myself one simple question:
If I removed the personality from the conversation, what would the evidence tell me?

That's when it hit me.

Someone can be absolutely certain and completely wrong.

What bothered me most wasn't simply that we disagreed. It was the assumption that if the same position was repeated often enough, eventually I'd stop trusting my own judgment.
That's a powerful persuasion tactic.

Remember:..he loudest voice in the room isn't automatically the smartest one. Repeating the same argument five times doesn't create five pieces of evidence. It creates one argument repeated five times.
When we're outside our area of expertise, that's when we're most vulnerable. Whether it's a contractor, a a financial advisor, or anyone with years of experience, it's easy to assume they know more than we do.
Sometimes they do. Sometime not. Don't confuse someone's certainty with the truth.

I am so excited!
New York and the Knicks are electric right now. Who would have thought?

Okay, maybe I did. Us New Yorkers are allowed to be a little delusional before everyone else catches up.

But even with a completely unbiased New York perspective, the Knicks didn’t just win because they had talent. They stayed in the game.

They didn’t fold under pressure. They didn’t let a bad stretch turn into a bad story. They didn’t start playing not to lose.

They played to win.

And that is exactly why this is not just a basketball story. It’s a poker strategy story.

One of the best comeback stories in poker happened at the 1982 @wsop. A player named Jack Straus thought he was out of the game. He was on a bad run, had lost a huge hand and was ready to leave the table. Then someone saw one chip left when he got up from the table. Because Straus had not officially gone “all in”, that chip was still live.
So was he.

And from that one chip, he came back and won the whole Poker tournament.
That’s where the phrase “A Chip and a Chair” comes from.
As long as you still have a chip and a seat at the table, you’re not out.

That is unless you trash-talk yourself into being out.

So what can the Knicks and one legendary poker chip teach us about business, confidence, and playing to win?

Three quick lessons I talk about in my Keynote presentations:
-Don’t confuse a bad stretch with the end of the game.
Momentum and energy changes fast if you stay in the hand.

-Don’t Let a Losing Position Trash-Talk You Out of the Win
A bad hand can mess with your head.
Don't start telling yourself the story is
over before it is.

-Read the table.
Talent matters, but knowing when to
make your move is critical.

Loved kicking things off at the New York Athletic Club @newyorkac with a keynote… and then taking it into a full @PokerDivas experience.

Mothers. Fathers. Sisters. Brothers.
Business partners. Associates. Strangers.

Different backgrounds, different reasons for being there.

And by the end of the night, none of that mattered.
Everyone was in it together.

That’s the magic.
It’s never about the cards, it’s about the people.

One of my favorite parts is connecting with everyone and closing it out. Celebrating the wins, the risks taken, the moments people surprise themselves.

And then this…
A woman came up to me, in a fabulous suit I might add, and said she couldn’t remember the last time she felt that motivated.

Back to reality… but honestly, there’s no such thing as too much fun. ☀️

One of the perks of being a keynote speaker is getting to work all over the country. Yes, I’m working, but I’m also meeting incredible people, seeing new places, and trading winter coats for a little sunshine along the way.

My personal win this season? Avoiding as many snowstorms as possible. ❄️
