I am 56 today.
I had planned to post a morning-hair, sleepy-faced, natural-light selfie, and tell you all how much I love aging and how proud I am to be sober and safe and loved and how lucky I am.

Then Danny sent these pictures we took four lifetimes ago on Venice Blvd, so I’m sharing these, because this is how I feel today.
Lucky and strong, and fully game to lie down on a city sidewalk if it’s good for the shot.

I hope you’re able to breathe and find some beauty today in this heartbreaking world.

My sweetheart took me to see Fontaines DC play a live set in a mysterious building in mid-Wilshire on a Monday afternoon, and one of the security guys took this nice picture of us in our accidentally coordinated outfits.

Six years ago today. Late night selfie with a couple of the kitchen crew after we’d made it through a hellish shift. Holy moly that was a tough time. No idea where these guys are now. Back then they were part of my small and scrappy team, rebuilding a neighborhood spot under incredibly difficult conditions. It was stupidly hard work, and I’ll forever be proud of what we did. Kisha was tough.
She could be hard on people. Sometimes she was hard on me.

She would adopt a seemingly impossible stance on an issue, in an instant, just to argue it through.

She made me cry with laughter.

We grew up together. Figured things out together. Explored, unsupervised, everything we could find to get into.

I loved her on a bone deep level, and always will.

There were years we didn’t keep in touch well enough. Time zones, telephones, busy lives.

Heartaches, and triumphs come and gone without her input. I try to imagine her advice, that I could have used. Tough love, with a laugh in her voice:
“I’m sorry you’re dealing with that. But get over it!”

Paula made a portrait of her that I carry with me. Someone I met told me it looked like the face of the moon, in its gradual shading and circular frame. This suits us perfectly.
Now I speak to Kisha every night when I see the moon. I tell her how beautiful she looks (she was a true beauty!) and how much I miss her.
