Words from a recent client it has been a joy to see flourish on her sober journey ✨

I am working on a much longer post that further details my commitment to ethical practice, but in the meantime I wanted to share details of the training and experience I have as a sober coach. My lived experience of over 10 years struggling with alcohol before finally breaking free nearly 7 years ago is a big reason people choose to work with me. But training and support (including supervision, as therapists have) is key to support women who want to quit drinking in a way that is ethical and responsible.

I will say more in a following post, but for now I want to make it clear that I do not work with people who are physically addicted to alcohol. My free assessment call can be up to an hour as it is essential I get a full picture of someone’s drinking, circumstances and risk factors. If physical addiction is a risk I explain the danger of stopping drinking and talk them through appropriate support options with the first port of call in the UK being their GP (doctor).

I am grateful to Stephanie Chivers at @womenwhodontdrink who has given me invaluable training and guidance on this and recommend her as a supervisor if you are a sober coach.

I am trauma-informed but am not a therapist or qualified to support people to process trauma or who have significant mental health challenges. If I have a call with someone where this is the case, I will recommend therapy and/or speaking to their GP as it would not be safe or responsible for me to work with them.

A note on testimonials: these are all words from clients I have coached, and one who I mentored. You can find the full testimonials on my website with first names if a client has said they are happy for me to include that. Client safety and confidentiality are of paramount importance to me so I do not share people’s full names, or ever ask for photos, video testimonials, or share screenshots of messages or emails.

I am committed to working with integrity and ethically. Sober coaching is just one option of support. There are fantastic free groups and resources out there such as those offered by @she_recovers and @alcoholchangeuk

Every time you drink is an opportunity to reflect and learn.
You’re not going back to day 1 - you’ve come so far.

You’re trying so hard.
Every day is a new day to start again.
Every moment, a new moment.

Look at how many times you’ve drunk over a period of months and compare it to the same period when you’ve been drinking a lot - have you reduced your drinking? Then that’s a big win and you should be so proud of yourself.

Keep going. You’re doing great ✨

Yesterday was a joyful, busy, beautiful day that I was exhausted by the end of but my heart was full! ❤️

Marisa @hema.sounds and I held our first Connect and Inspire gathering for people in wellness. We had a heavenly sound bath, a fantastic talk from @the_olakowalska that helped us connect to the people we would love to work with, and had truly open-hearted conversations. It was such a privilege to be in the company of this amazing group of people who shared vulnerably and created a feeling of collaboration and support.

Our next meet up is Weds 18 Nov and we’d love you to come (link in my bio)

After that I headed home for group supervision with @mandy_manners_ to support my sober coaching practice.

And after that I was off to my son’s school to help host a screening of the People’s Emergency Briefing. @nebriefing I am usually scared of public speaking but when I thanked everyone at the end I felt totally at ease. I realised it was because I felt safe to be myself. I was looking out over a group of around 50 parents who had used their evening to come along and take part, including volunteer, share how they were feeling and talk together about solutions for Lewes to tackle the climate crisis. Again: a real privilege to be there and be part of this.

If you’re a Lewes-based parent you can join us at @parentsforfuture.lewes

I’m now off to a quiz night with friends and after that hoping for a good night’s sleep!!

I do this very often! Judge myself for feeling feelings - especially if I perceive other people as having different ones.

But I notice the judgement and criticism doesn’t make the feeling go away. It adds more suffering on top of the painful feeling.

What tends to help is to acknowledge that I am having the feeling. To say: it’s ok to have this feeling. This is hard. I’m here with you. I care about you.

This is self compassion 💛

Reflecting on a recent interview with @zachbaron and fellow sober soul Ben Affleck - so wonderful to grief and death spoken about rather than hidden away by fear and discomfort.

One of the great gifts I’ve been given by losing my parents young is knowing how brief and precious life is, and knowing what really matters in life.

Also made me remember a call I was recently on hosted by @themotherlessmothersuk and what a relief and comfort it was to talk about death and grief with the other mothers on the call. Such a rare and precious opportunity.

Please: if you know someone has lost someone, acknowledge it. Even a squeeze of the hand and the words ‘I’m so sorry’ means so much.

It’s World Mental Health Day and I wanted to share with you one of the most significant ways drinking alcohol impacts our mental health.

When we drink to cope with painful feelings like stress, sadness, grief, shame or anger, we are sedating ourselves with a drug. It’s a way of suppressing them and trying to make them go away.

Doing this over and over is like telling yourself your feelings aren’t allowed - that they aren’t ok and they aren’t safe to feel. Your valid, normal, understandable human feelings cannot move and change as they need to.

So this World Mental Health Day, consider taking a break from alcohol and seeing what happens to your mental health. This could be the beginning of your journey to gently meeting your feelings with understanding and love. I wonder what might happen if you treated yourself this way?

We’re so delighted that our first Connect and Inspire guest speaker will be @ola_kowalska_somatics

Ola Kowalska is a nervous system and somatic coach for ambitious, sensitive business owners. Before moving more deeply into somatic work, she spent years coaching entrepreneurs around business, money, marketing and growth.

Her work now brings those worlds together, exploring what happens when the strategy makes sense but being seen, selling your work or putting yourself out there still feels bloody hard. She helps business owners understand the human and nervous-system side of visibility, so they can show up for their work without constantly overriding themselves.

She’ll be speaking on Weds 21 October at our Connect and Inspire networking event for wellness practitioners and businesses. Her talk will help guide you to make your work more visible and attract more clients.
