I was in Cuba for 12 days…

I have avoided making this post for quite some time, not because I was ashamed of my trip, but because I really wasn’t sure what to say. Everyone came home from this trip with no words to say at all. We sat and stared off into space for days, not really sure how to process what we experienced, and not really sure how to explain the sadness we felt coming home.

I went on this trip thinking that I was going to bless the Cuban people, but in return, they blessed me instead. I cannot put into words the immense gratitude I feel knowing I got to experience something this amazing so young, but there is one thing I know…

Cuba is a special place. In order to come here, you have to be ready to accept their kindness, their love, and their gratitude. In the same breath, you must also be ready to accept their sadness, their hopelessness, and their uncertainty. The Cuban people have a special kind of love that only comes from a place of true faith. It does not waver, and it does not become rocky when times are uncertain in their lives.

In Cuba I met angels on earth, people who would give you something even if it meant they would be without, and people who would show you love and compassion no matter the circumstances. Even in their situation, they are not concerned with things of this world, but instead they have set their minds on things above.

I have come back from this trip overwhelmed with emotions, and not really sure how to put them into words. I dream of the friends I made, I see their faces every time I close my eyes, and I will never forget what this amazing experience has done for my life.

This was my first time to Cuba, but it will not be my last.

I remember registering for DBC, hoping I’d have a good time and maybe make a friend or two. I had no idea what was coming. People don’t return to the same places year after year out of habit — they return out of love. When you’ve felt like an outcast for most of your life, and then you find a place that makes you feel not just accepted but appreciated, you hold onto it with everything you have. For me, that place is DBC. …
First, to my captains: thank you for taking someone unsure of herself and turning her into someone people could lean on. Thank you for your friendship, your kindness, and for giving me some of the best memories of my life. DBC will always be a place I look back on fondly, and that’s because of you. I may never find friends like this again, and I’m at peace with that — as long as it means I get to keep you all forever. You’ve blessed me more than you know, and I’m endlessly grateful. …
To my two best friends: thank you for showing me what true friendship looks like. Thank you for never tiring of me, and never making me feel silly for loving what I love or being who I am. You gave me a kind of reassurance I’ll carry forever, and I’m forever in your debt for it. This isn’t goodbye — just see you later. I can’t wait for what’s next. …
Finally, to music: this goodbye is not forever, just for now. Years from now, when people ask about my childhood, I’ll light up telling them about the role music played in it. It gave me belonging, passion, and kindness I didn’t know I needed. I don’t know what’s ahead, but I’m excited and ready for it — and that’s because of music. I’ll always be in its debt. …
