Focusing on the controllables 💭

The car journeys home after games are always key moments. Especially after being on the wrong end of the scoreline.

A lot of uncontrollables popped up today... A sudden change in kick-off time, teammates running a little late, a different coach taking the team, and conversations around whether opposition players were eligible to play.

All of those things had an impact on the game this morning, and I could tell they were playing on Ellie’s mind. So I simply asked..

“Were any of those things your fault? And could you control what happened?”

“No,” was her response.

So we spoke about the importance of focusing on what she can control...
The smile on her face, her personal goals, strong effort, positive attitude, and how she responds in difficult moments.

There will always be distractions, touchline noise, and politics in the game. But today’s lesson was all about controlling what is within Ellie’s gift ⚽️ 💖
