This would have to be one of the most instantly recognizable guitar riffs of all time right? I feel like I have so many memories of singing along to this song. It apparently began by accident in a jam session warm up exercise with Slash. The words will now always remind me of this sweet child of mine right here. Surfing sapphire waves in the Tear of India might just be one of the best things I’ve ever done. Pushing myself to the limit. Because why not. What else are we here for if not to face our fears and see what we are capable of. Never have I found a thing that makes me feel more alive than surfing. Must do this more. lol @timmacdonald you’re fine to take the kids again right?

Andrew Quilty is an Award-winning photojournalist and author. His work in ‘Afghanistan’ has been published worldwide and garnered accolades including a World Press Photo award, three Picture of the Year International awards, and nine Walkley Awards, including the Gold Walkley. Curated by Ellie Waterhouse, Afghanistan is a profoundly moving and powerful exhibition of photographs captured during Quilty’s years in the Afghan capital of Kabul from 2013 to 2022. Quilty describes his work from this period as an ‘imperfect portrait of time and place’. His photographs skilfully balance moments of beauty and brutality, humanising the effects of war while inviting reflection on resilience, hope, and the impact of conflict on everyday life.

We knew we wanted a performance at the opening of @andrewquilty ‘s Afghanistan exhibition.

I was looking at a photograph of a young woman in a scarlet red velvet dress singing while standing against the backdrop of a Band-e-Amir - a deep blue lake in Bamyan, set amidst the rugged landscape of the Hindu Kush mountains. A place I dream of visiting one day. Quilty told me the story of when they met and how he photographed the behind the scenes of her new film clip she was shooting. @zahra.elham.official was only 18 when she was crowned the first ever female to win Afghan Star. She is a true idol who represents freedom of expression for young girls in Afghanistan. Singing is now a freedom that is forbidden under Taliban rule.

I connected with her on instagram and almost fell off my chair when she told me she lives in AUSTRALIA now. It truly was meant to be that she would perform at the opening. Thanks to @hannahlattwood from @ssi_news @bemacpresents support this was able to be possible. An unforgettable performance. Her story of how she escaped the Taliban is both chilling, heartbreaking and indeed hopeful.

Not only this, but @lorrainejfinlay @aushumanrights commissioner, @danielagavshon Director, @humanrightswatchau @humanrightswatch , Andrea Higgins @magsqld and @chrisbennyimaging from the gallery all spoke of the power of storytelling and art in the fight for human rights. A powerful and moving collaboration.

Helmand.
The most violent territory in the war. The heartland of the Taliban insurgency. Largely populated by the minority Hazara community.

Quilty’s lens offers us a window into a shadowed tenderness that exists beyond the harrowing images of war that came out of Afghanistan. We have a responsibility to understand what happened here not only in war, but to learn about the innocent lives who became embroiled in the conflict. This image reflects a tender, sensitive moment a boy is having, while the war continues to rage.

Hear more in this short excerpt of the curators in-conversation with Andrew Quilty and I from the opening symposium. An honour to interview Quilty on his time spent documenting the resilience and hope of the people of Afghanistan.
