Removing the bulk is extremely important when draping! This allows you to have flat seams as you’re creating your finished product.

When it comes to draping heavy crinoline is one of my favorite materials to use! And it’s something I teach designers how to use through out my draping course.

Have you used heavy crinoline before? How do you implement it into your designs?

Dm me the word “drape” and I’ll send you the details to my live draping class and course that’s happening this weekend where I’ll be showing you how to use heavy crinoline for draped garments! by @ellissewingco

Boning placement can make or break the structure of your garment! 🪡✨

When creating couture corsets and dramatic silhouettes, it’s not just about adding boning. It’s about understanding WHERE to place it and how much support your design actually needs.

For this particular design, I approached the structure differently in three areas:

✨ The Front: I placed boning approximately 1–2 inches apart to provide structure and support.

✨ The Back: I added more boning and extended the base higher up the back for additional support.

✨ The Sculptural Piece: I used a grid-like boning pattern to help the structure maintain its dramatic shape.

Understanding techniques like these can make such a difference in how your final garment looks and fits!

SAVE this post for the next time you’re working on a structured corset or dramatic couture design! 📌

And if you’d like to learn more about creating couture corsets, structured drapes, and bringing your own dramatic designs to life, I teach these techniques in my hands-on Atlanta Couture Draping Intensives and online courses!

PART 2 of my Couture Draping Tutorial! 🖤✨

In this video, I’m showing you how I draped fabric over my structured arm piece to create this dramatic silhouette!

For this look, I used three materials:

✨ Twill organza from @moodfabrics
✨ Ultra-stiff Pellon interfacing
✨ Boning for additional structure and support

This was actually a pretty simple technique, but understanding how to combine the right materials is what allows you to create dramatic shapes that hold their structure!

And if you want to learn how to create pieces like this for your OWN designs, I’d love to teach you! 🖤

My next Atlanta Couture Draping Intensive is October 16th–18th!

During this hands-on experience, you’ll learn:
🧵 How to create a couture corset
🧵 The different fabrics and structural materials I use in my designs
🧵 Couture draping and construction techniques
🧵 With personalized in-person instruction, access to additional online draping projects, and a virtual finishing session!

Tomorrow is the last day to register for this weekend’s class! ✨

Whether you’re interested in joining me in person or learning through my online courses, comment CLASS and I’ll DM you all the details! 🖤 by @ellissewingco

Reposting this since you guys loved this video so much, but the original audio got deleted! ❤️

Boning is NOT just for corsets 👀

It’s actually one of my favorite materials to use when creating dramatic, structured garments.

I use boning to support draped structures, hold fabric in unexpected shapes, create volume, and reinforce details that wouldn’t be able to hold themselves up on their own.

Once I stopped thinking about boning as something that only belongs inside a corset, it opened up so many more possibilities in my designs.

One of the biggest things I’ve learned through draping is that sometimes the secret to getting fabric to do what you want isn’t the fabric itself…

It’s what you build underneath it. ✨

Did you know you could use boning this way?

Let me know in the comments! 🖤

Want to learn more about couture draping? I teach the materials, techniques, and construction methods I use to create dramatic, structured designs in my in-person classes and online courses!

The secret to creating dramatic couture drapes isn’t just the fabric you see… it’s what you use UNDERNEATH. 👀

Ultra-stiff Pellon, cancan, and horsehair fabric are three of my go-to materials when creating structured couture designs.

But knowing WHEN and HOW to use each one can completely change the outcome of your draping.

It’s all about understanding structure, flexibility, volume, and how to bring your creative vision to life. ✨

And if you’re ready to take your draping skills to the next level, I’d love to teach you!

I break down these materials, techniques, and so much more in my in-person and online Couture Draping classes.

Ever wonder what actually goes into creating a dramatic draped look like this? 👀

This design started with an idea, but bringing it to life meant figuring out the structure underneath, building the drape piece by piece, adding support where it was needed, hand sewing everything into place, and constantly trying it on and refining the shape along the way.

That’s one of my favorite things about couture draping—you can start with fabric and an idea and completely transform it into something sculptural. ✨

Swipe through to see a little of my process from the first drape to the final photoshoot look. →

And if you want to learn how to create your own dramatic draped garments, I have several opportunities to learn with me in Atlanta this fall—from couture corset draping and statement sleeves to my full Couture Draping Intensives.

Every time I’ve intentionally taken time to pour back into my craft, I’ve come out of that season a better designer. 🖤

Sometimes growth requires giving yourself the space to experiment, try something you’ve never done before, challenge your creativity, and simply CREATE.

If you’re ready to do that, come spend 3 days creating with me at my next Atlanta Couture Draping Intensive, October 16th-18th. ✨

We’ll be diving into couture draping, structure, fabric manipulation, and creating dramatic silhouettes—with lots of hands-on guidance along the way.

Registration closes October 14th.
