This work will be exhibited on the 8th of June at the Gallery of the Official Residence of the Portuguese Consulate, Macau.

Part of the upcoming exhibition “The Presence of Portuguese Matrix in Macau, in the Images Between Times” organized by @halftone.photography association.

This image is part of the humanist series Temporary Bodies, an ongoing analog pinhole street photography challenge that aims to capture the essence of humanity in relation to its own artificial landscape. It will be accompanied by another image, Temporary Bodies3.

This image will be printed for the first time and available for purchase, signed and stamped.

From a Knot

The cord is thin. It cuts into the throat just enough to stop a swallow.
Convenience tied around flesh.
Supper caught, but cannot be kept. It will serve someone else for something else.
The eye is not angry. That is what disturbs us.
It looks resigned, as if it has forgotten there was ever a time without the Knot.
Partnership or subjugation disguised as
tradition?
The humidity of Yangshuo softens everything except that. In every close-up, the
hemp glows white against dark feathers, a constant reminder of who controls the hunt
The man's hand is not cruel. It is practiced, almost tender. But tenderness does not erase the Knot.
We watch the bird dive again, neck restrained, paddling against the current, and feel
the weight of our own gaze. Complicit in such dark beauty..
Photographs like evidence. No blood or struggle. The most unsettling part. The Great Cormorant returns to the raft, opens its beak, and offers prey like a habit long past choice. We want to call it cruel, the silence calls it peaceful. The photograph refuses both.

A door half-ajar. Does tradition overstep what is
humane? Perhaps the question is not for the bird, but for us. The ones who have worn a rope around our own throats for someone else's delight.

It dives again into the dark that closes in. And I am left with the Knot.

From a Knot

The rope is thin.
It cuts into the throat just enough to stop a swallow.
Human convenience tied around living flesh.
The fisherman's hand, when it appears, is not cruel. It is practiced, almost
tender. But tenderness does not erase conditioning from a Knot.
