40. Yuri Pavlinov: Bass, Stories, 20 Years with The Bamboos, Renee Geyer, and the Future of Live Music in Australia

This week’s special guest is Yuri Pavlinov, a hard-working and mega-talented bass player. Yuri has been a key member of The Bamboos for over 20 years, an institution in the Australian funk and soul scene. I’ve been a fan of Yuri’s bass playing for years, so it was an absolute privilege to have him on the podcast.
We discuss his early days in the 90s Melbourne music scene, getting thrown into the deep end with Renee Geyer on the mainstage at Bluesfest, and the natural high of playing great gigs. Yuri shares tales of tape dubbing, carrying a VOX AC30 on a tram, and hanging around Fitzroy during its vibrant music heyday.
We also dive into his time gigging in suits with The Bamboos, costumes with his heavy-metal band Barbariön, community, and the music industry. Yuri offers candid thoughts on the future of live music in Melbourne and Australia, reflecting on the challenges and opportunities ahead.
It’s a rich conversation with a true legend of the music scene, full of humour, insights, and passion for music.

Available on our website, all podcast platforms and YouTube, the full conversation is out on Wednesday February 5, 2025.
