On Tuesday November 14th I will give a talk about the making of « Living in Mycelium », the catalog for the Belgian Pavilion at the 18th Venice Architecture Biennale, curated by the brilliant souls @bento.architecture and Vinciane Despret.

An inspiring fictional account that takes the form of an investigation conducted in the 2050s « Living in Mycelium » calls into question our voracious, extractivist production system by giving us an opportunity to see, feel and experience an alternative constructive world made from and with living materials, namely fungi.

An occasion to invite Céline Gillain @gelinecillain to occupy the narratives sonically, inoculating the discourse with a mushroom-like future, as a portal to the experience of text and it's sonic physicality.

The performance will be in French but fungal languages will most certainly be involved.

Here we are, opening officially the Belgian Pavilion with In Vivo, the strong and poetic proposition of Bento & Vinciane Despret, and it’s related catalogue Demeurer en Mycélium (Living in Mycelium). We feel particularly blessed and proud to have been invited to craft and conceive the signage and the catalogue with this kind, imaginative and talented team. An inspiring journey towards better futures.

Last months have been busy shaping, crafting, writing and thinking the art direction and design of QUEERING BRUSSELS. More than an exhibition, the project invited us—queer team of experts—to cultivate virtuous ecosystems of work, based on patience, kindness, care, respect and the celebration of our otherness. Once and for all dears: this is not about the destination, this is all about the journey.

The selection of the 33 Best Dutch Books Design 🇳🇱 from the 2019 issue is exhibited in the frame of the show Versatile Volumes in KF Gallery Seoul 🇰🇷.

Very honored to have designed this beautiful 17th issue of the "cahiers van de velde", dedicated to Herman Daled. He was the first president of the Fonds Henry van de Velde and he was an attentive, available, helpful and generous president for some fifteen years — from 2004 to 2019. His death at the end of 2020 came as a shock to the many people who had known him as a radiologist, collector and friend of artists, as well as an architecture enthusiast; a committed enthusiast who owned one of the most interesting houses built by van de Velde in Brussels for more than 40 years: the Wolfers Hotel. It is to this exceptional and paradoxically little studied house, and to the very particular way in which Herman Daled chose to 'be present' there, that this tribute booklet is dedicated.

Architects at Play is the result of a research process into play and the imagination, built experiments and mythological narratives. The exhibition is essentially centred on the idea of ‘Creating Worlds’. It attempts to bring together two characters: the architect and the child. •

FROM THE ARCHIVE — A/R 2018 n°1 (2018)
•
A/R (Art-Slash-Recherche) is a non‑profit association for the support, exchange, dissemination and promotion of artistic research in the higher art schools of the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles. While seeking to support research in the field of the arts by acting as an initiator through calls for projects, A/R asbl intends to disseminate this research by putting it into circulation to a wider audience.
In this context, A/R initiated an annual review project, bringing together interviews with its researchers and essays by artists and theorists that highlight similarities or echo the projects presented. Since one of the specific features of the editorial project is to bring together completely variable and varied forms of writing, the design of the publication has been approached accordingly: it is the contributions that shape the periodical, not the opposite.
As a result, flexible graphic attributes and layout grids have been defined and designed to allow as many text layout options as possible. Particular attention was also paid to the materiality of the periodical itself: a generous format in which the alternation of paper supports not only the identification of contributions by nature but also conveys a strong identity and a resolutely sensual approach towards publication as an object.

These last months, I have been commissioned by artist @hadassah.emmerich to design her new monographic publication published by @onomatopeenet. The catalogue, elaborated in conversation with the artist documents works from 2016 to 2019 and coincides with her current solo show at De Garage, Mechelen (cur. @leemans_koen), and an upcoming presentation at Onomatopee Projects, Eindhoven. The book features an essay (en/fr/nl) by art historian and curator Nina Kolkersma (@aninafolkersma), has been remarkably printed by @diekeureprinting and typeset in Favorit (@abcdinamo Type foundry). Thank you @hadassah.emmerich for this beautiful collaboration, @onomatopeenet for your trust, and all the institutions that supported this project financially, and without whom we could not have achieved such a result! 👀 More pictures soon to come on my website.
