🇦🇹🇨🇦🇪🇺 Today, on the International Day of Democracy, we are reminded that democracy depends not only on institutions and elections, but also on places where people can meet, exchange ideas, create together and feel part of a community.
Last week, I had the pleasure from our side of @kreativeraeume of welcoming two experts @de_moz + Trevor McKay from @lifeincalgary to Vienna. As part of their European tour, they are exploring examples and gathering inspiration for Calgary’s cultural and creative industries. Their journey includes stops in cities such as London and Paris, and we were pleased to invite them at the @creativecluster_vienna with the host Karim El Seroui @elseroui (who is running with his team this remarkable project). The @creativecluster_vienna is a remarkable example of how an interim use project can develop into an important cultural hub. Located in a former vocational school owned by the City of Vienna, the project began in 2019 and reactivates approximately 3,600 m² of previously vacant space. Today, the building brings together a diverse range of creative practices and people—from landscape architecture and contemporary dance to painting, game design, music, sculpture and furniture made from reused materials. It functions as a cultural incubator, a workspace, a platform for exchange and a meeting place for the neighbourhood. Projects like this are particularly important in times of climate challenges. Reusing existing buildings instead of constructing new ones is an important contribution to a more sustainable city. But the value of these spaces goes far beyond the buildings themselves. Cultural and creative spaces can: bring people together across different backgrounds; create opportunities for participation and exchange; make art and culture more accessible; encourage us to question what we believe to be true or right; and strengthen communities during times of social and political pressure. This is why interim projects deserve recognition and support. Even when their future is uncertain or their duration is limited, they can have a lasting impact on a neighbourhood and its communities. #calgary #vienna #culture #exchange #democracy taken in Creative Cluster by @elseroui
