We are delighted to reveal the cover of Amy Orrell’s forthcoming new fantasy novel These Fated Gifts, a dramatic tale of magic, power, love and the need to belong. Set in a parallel world in which large swathes of East Anglia and the South have been lost to rising sea levels, These Fated Gifts tells the story of estranged twin sisters, Elin and Bryn, fated to defend both old world and new from the man who orphaned them.

Amy spent much of her childhood on the Norfolk Broads. The reed-fringed waterways, with their vast and ever-changing skies, provided the inspiration for the fictional islands of Orvaear, birthplace to the twins, and the cover art which Amy herself painted bringing her love of art together with her passion for writing. “I worked as an artist for many years, with highlights including commissions for the John Innes Institute, and an elephant sculpture for the 2008, Norwich Go Go Elephant Trail. It’s been really exciting to produce the maps and cover art for my own novel and, since this is part of a duology, I’ll be getting out my art supplies to create a cover for part two!”

These Fated Gifts, book one of the Orvaean Duology, will be published by Elsewhen Press on 16th October 2026 in both ebook and paperback, and will be available online and via good bookshops. by @elsewhenpress

Where are all the aliens?

The Fermi Paradox questions why we haven’t met aliens when there must be so many inhabited worlds in the universe. Author V.R. Ling provides the answer… they’re avoiding us!

In 1950, renowned physicist Enrico Fermi asked the question “But where is everybody?” over lunch at Los Alamos. It wasn’t diners that he thought were missing, but extra-terrestrial civilisations. The question, subsequently more formally documented and known as the Fermi Paradox, asks why there is no clear evidence of alien life even though there are a vast number of stars and potentially habitable planets in the observable universe. So far, there has been, of course, no definitive answer to the question.

One answer, supported by author V.R. Ling, proposes that the aliens in the rest of the universe are deliberately avoiding Earth and humans, due to dismay and disgust at the way humans treat one another and other sentient life. Perhaps not a surprising conclusion, especially given many current major news items, but certainly one that is an intriguing starting point for a science fiction author. How do the aliens know what is happening on earth? Do they have agents here keeping tabs? Would they ever intervene? And that last question leads to an even more interesting possibility. What if an alien eco-warrior decided to take unilateral action against some of humanity’s worst offenders? Would an intergalactic agency try to stop them?

Welcome to Paradox Lost.

Professor Daniel Whiteson, particle physicist and professor of physics at UC Irvine, USA, says of Paradox Lost: “A clever take on a cosmic question, told as a thrilling story.”

Musician Alan Marshall, bass & vocals in Hack Job, says: “A book that doesn’t pull its punches! When the human race is designated too abhorrent for first contact do you study it from a respectful distance or grab a portal hopping device and start making amends? Bizarre murders and unfathomable disappearances, Paradox Lost is gripping sci-fi with a darkly humorous flip side.”

Comedian Jake Yapp said: “It’s brilliant!”

Paradox Lost is published today, 14th August 2026, in paperback and eBook formats. Cover image for Paradox Lost by V.R. Ling. Cover art by Alison Buck and NASA. Against a starry black background, a NASA image of the Earth with a greenish alien hand holding a shiny black ball in front of it. Today, we are delighted to publish Tej Turner’s latest book Blood Ruin, the fourth book in his epic fantasy series The Avatars of Ruin, continuing the story of the previous three books in the series (Bloodsworn, Blood Legacy, and Blood War).

Two years have passed since the Battle of Fort Valen, and its repercussions still echo across Sharma. Many of the people who fought are still missing, but it is unknown how many have perished and how many have fled. Towns and villages lie deserted, and bandits roam the hills and roadways.
Selena still maintains her position in the Synod, but only in name. In reality, she is now a puppet, biding her time and doing her utmost to resist the strings that pull her when she can blunt the cruel regime. Most of her allies are among those who have escaped. Bryna vanished mysteriously without leaving a trace, whilst Rivan seems to want to do nothing more than wander aimlessly. Baird has assembled a small band of insurgents but they are no match against an empire, and Kyra has ventured to the Mountains of Valleshia on a quest to find the Temple of Briggan.
To the south, the Babuan Jungle remains the final part of the world free from the tyranny of Gavendara, but Elita knows the threat their armies of Zakaras pose and believes that they, too, will succumb to the tide if she doesn’t convince them to fight.

Available from today in paperback and ebook from the usual retailers.

We are delighted to reveal the cover of V.R. Ling’s new satirical science fiction novel Paradox Lost.
The novel addresses the cosmic mystery, frequently framed as Fermi’s Paradox, of why humans haven’t met any alien species yet, if they are so likely to exist. In Paradox Lost, we discover why…

The Fermi paradox isn’t a paradox… It’s an answer!
Repelled by humanity, not least the state of their post-1940s architecture, the rest of the cosmos decides to keep the little perishers at arm’s length, blackballing Earth from the intergalactic community. Only when a string of bizarre and unexplained deaths occur are two representatives of that reluctant universe forced back to investigate.

The cover, envisaged by the author and created by Alison Buck (with some help from NASA) captures the moment an alien votes to blackball Earth.

Paradox Lost will be published in both eBook and paperback editions on 14th August. It will undoubtedly appeal to science fiction fans, of course, especially fans of Douglas Adams’ books, not to mention vegans, animal rights campaigners, astrophysicists, xenobiologists, and any extra-terrestrials who are already amongst us. Today, we are delighted to be publishing A Truth Beyond Sense by Rosie Oliver. Although it is a sequel to A Truth Beyond Full, it can be read entirely standalone. If you like science fiction with strong science, thrillers with smart protagonists, and adventure with edge of your seat tension, then this is the book for you!

The story is set on Miranda, an ice-moon of Uranus which has long been a mining colony. Dirk, the chief compineer on Miranda for the last ten years, has two secrets: he is on the run from Mars accused of starting a rogue nano-plague, despite being innocent; and he has a nano-ghost that enhances his performance as compineer. Following the discovery of a mysterious ring entrance in Verona Rupes, scientists are flocking to Miranda. The increased interest in the backwater mining colony has led to two Bolters (Martian Police) coming to Miranda in their search for Dirk. One is the real criminal behind the nano-plague and the other is Dirk’s mother.

While hiding from the Bolters, Dirk makes a discovery about the ring entrance that could spell disaster for the whole of Miranda. But how can he warn everyone about the danger without being caught?

As an added extra, Rosie’s novelette, Code for Escape, which recounts the story of the nano-plague on Mars that Dirk is accused of starting, is available for free download (along with Illusions, a short story of the discovery of Miranda’s potential for mining) from the Elsewhen Press website at

https://bit.ly/TruthBeyond

A Truth Beyond Sense is available to buy now on eBook platforms, and in paperback via all good book retailers.

Cover art by Alex Storer Cover image by Alex Storer, for A Truth Beyond Sense by Rosie Oliver. The cover has a grey, textured background suggestive of the rock of which the moon Miranda is composed. around the edges is foliage and plants suggestive of the greenhouses used to grow food to feed the inhabitants. In the middle of the cover the rock has a hole, apparently looking into a tunnel which has stalactites and stalagmites, and a bright light source at the far end which permeates the whole tunnel with a greenish light. In the tunnel there is a figure of a person in a space suit, struggling to walk between the stalagmites. At the top of the cover the title is printed in white uppercase sans serif letters that appear to be incised in the image; at the bottom the author’s name is incised in similar letters in a light green. by @elsewhenpress

Today is Indie Press Day, dedicated to talking about indie authors and indie publishers. As an indie publisher, we have the greatest job – we get to read some of the best new genre fiction around, before anybody else. How cool is that! But once we’ve published it, you can read it too – just look through our catalogue of fantastic titles on our website.

Indie Press Day is the perfect opportunity to tell you about our fantastic authors and their books. Indie presses are the last bastion of truly independent publishing, often being the only publishers prepared to take the risk of publishing new authors and complex, challenging or uncategorisable writing. The sort of books that are ignored or dismissed by the large international conglomerates. Look for #IndiePressDay to find great authors, great presses, great books.

Indie presses are holding out against the encroachment of AI ‘slop’ into publishing, they pride themselves on their close relationships with authors developed over the editing process – ensuring that the books they publish are amazing human-authored masterpieces. You know that a book published by an indie has been selected with care – unlike large faceless publishers, decisions in indie presses are taken by the very people who have read and chosen the books they publish and have then worked closely with the author during the whole process.

But Indie presses have limited resources and little, if any, marketing budget, which is why indie authors are keen to encourage readers to help promote the presses, authors and their books. So on Indie Press Day you can help ensure that great books continue to be published by indie presses. The rest of the year it’s the big faceless corporate publishers who dominate the media. Let’s reclaim the media, even if only for one day, to tell anyone who’ll listen how amazing indie books are. If you’ve loved a book, write a review, tell your friends, post about it today with #IndiePressDay. Make a difference. May 1st INDIE PRESS DAY 2026. Post about indie books and publishers you love. #IndiePressDay MAY THE FIRST PORT OF CALL BE AN INDIE by @elsewhenpress

May 1st is Indie Press Day. Readers, authors, publishers and bookshops are encouraged to promote books by indie authors and indie presses by using the hashtag #IndiePressDay on social media.
Inaugurated last year by a small group of indie authors, it is an opportunity for readers, authors, publishers and bookshops to highlight the plethora of great books that are published every year by Independent Presses. Books that otherwise do not receive the media coverage, promotion, and marketing that is dominated by a select few published by the handful of large international conglomerates.
Elsewhen Press, an indie publisher specialising in human-authored speculative fiction, will be supporting Indie Press Day again this year. Last year, it was a group of indie authors published by Elsewhen Press who realised that there was no specific day dedicated to celebrating and promoting indie presses. So they decided to designate 1st May as Indie Press Day and use #IndiePressDay on social media to encourage readers to support indie authors and indie presses. Indie presses are now seen by many as the last bastion of truly independent publishing, often being the only publishers prepared to take the risk of publishing new authors and complex, challenging or unclassifiable writing, that are ignored or dismissed by the large conglomerates. Indie presses are also holding out against the encroachment of AI ‘slop’ into publishing, and pride themselves on their close relationships with authors developed over the editing process – unlike large faceless publishers, decisions in indie presses are taken by the very people who have read and chosen the books to be published and have then worked closely with the author during the whole process. Indie presses have limited resources and little, if any, marketing budget, which is why the authors are keen to encourage readers to help promote the presses, authors and their books.
This year, those same indie authors are continuing their ‘instant tradition’ and once more promoting #IndiePressDay on 1st May. They have also produced this artwork that can be freely used by anyone on social media or websites to promote Indie Press Day. May 1st INDIE PRESS DAY 2026.
