Have you noticed all the beautiful new murals lately in SW?

Local residents know what’s up - and who’s behind these beautiful artistic creations.

So we wanna show extra-special love right here for the person responsible: Elton Monroy Duran (@eltonmonroy).

We’re extremely grateful Duran chose SW Detroit back in 2014 to make his home as a visual artist and mural painter.

His creations are stunning and with a deeper dive - can also be a richly educational experience.

And he’s insanely prolific.

With more than two dozen murals and counting…Duran conveys much passion from the inspiring stories of our Latino and Mexican-American brothers and sisters.

The way he personally relates to those stories is staring right at us while we admire his work.

“That’s me, my body, my hands,” he says, while we’re on site at “The Dream Picker” mural (Vernor and Junction). He has a super friendly chuckle that frequently slips in when talking about, well – anything.

By the time he got established in Detroit he was already in his 30s. Goin’ back - he got started as an eager young student in one of Mexico's most ancient cities – Tula, Hidalgo.

“The history and art there was amazing and I was very inspired,” he tells us back at Corpus Art, Inc Community Center.

“I pushed my parents to put me in (art) school, when I was about 13, maybe 14 years old. And so I started painting – oil painting – and began creating beautiful landscapes, stuff like that. And I started competing, and fell very much in love with that.”

With his talent taking flight, he began exploring and expanding his purpose as an artist.

“When I was done with school and completed much training, I became very attracted to concept art. Going beyond the visuals to communicate some ideas.”

His efforts are strengthening the common identity in an already close-knit community.

Yesterday we had an amazing time at The Spirit of Detroit Plaza in Downtown Detroit. Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with a festival sponsored by Ally financial.
