Sonagliera, 2026

I made this sculpture during the @neverendingglen residency this year. It is made with raw Scottish sheep’s wool, naturally dyed red with lac and spun over a metal frame. Each pendant is a piece of pressed natural ephemera foraged from @kelburnestate and encased within beeswax sheets.

This sculpture’s shape and name is borrowed from a 16th century Italian instrument. Sonaglieras are percussive and tambourine-like, adorned with many rounded bells. Here, instead of bells are wax ‘cameos’ tied with angora, each freezing in time a fragment from the forest. I was inspired by some of the Victorian displays of cameos and miniature painted portraits that I was shown inside Kelburn Castle. Each wax pendant I made became a ‘memento mori’ of sorts for a petal or feather that would otherwise degrade and disappear. by @elveyannastedman

Gold ground has been selected for both the Young Scottish Filmmaker Prize as part of @glasgowshort and for the @donaicinema_ film festival in Valencia!

This is my first film and I’m over the moon to be included amongst the incredible work that has also been selected for these festivals.

Saeculum! I had a wonderful time putting on this group show with my friends @margueritecarnec and @rebecca_rosa_fielding at @salt_spacecoop at the start of the month.

Amongst these beautiful prints, drawings and paintings from the ladies I showed my sculptural installation ‘Mnemosyne’. I used black unglazed stoneware clay, black horse hair and beeswax to create these miniature hanging and free standing figures. Mnemosyne means remembrance in ancient Greek. Our exhibition name ‘Saeculum’ is an Etruscan word meaning a length of time roughly equal to a human life, or the period of time in which there is human renewal.

Thank you so much to Becca and Marguerite for being so inspiring and easy to work with and to @tufftay for helping us out last minute with our booklets of written material! I also want to give a huge shout out to @ezra.berrnico at @kiln.klub for firing the ceramics for me and for being such a supportive and important presence in my creative life!

We are excited to announce the first of our Residency Artists for The Neverending Glen 2026!
Elvey Anna Stedman, (b.1998) is a visual artist based in Glasgow. She graduated in 2021 with a Fine Art degree from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design. She has been nominated for the Young Scottish Filmmaker Prize (2025) and has been awarded the Alastair Smart Memorial Prize (2021), the RSA John Kinross Scholarship (2021 and the RSA Patrons Prize (2022).

Stedman uses her creative practice as a means to explore her fixations with fragility and the threat of destruction to systems of natural beauty. She primarily examines the various ways in which humans connect to and reject their relationship with the natural world. With a combined use of sculpture, performance, printmaking and stop motion animation, she reflects a visual language that has guided her since childhood.

Elvey Anna Stedman graduated in 2021 from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design and is currently based in Glasgow, where she reflects a visual language that has guided her since childhood, using a combination of sculpture, performance, printmaking and stop motion animation.

‘Gold Ground’ was written, narrated and animated by Elvey Anna Stedman and scored by Magnus Kramers in 2023, in response to three months spent in Florence and rural Tuscany as part of the RSA John Kinross Scholarship.

I’m delighted to share that my film Gold Ground will be exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy as part of the Origin Stories show, open from the 24th of January to the 8th of March.

Ghost in the Machine, Hidden Door 2025

I had the pleasure of creating this 5 night performance and sculptural installation with @jill_martin_boualaxai as our director and installation lead, and @almasuasua @fionaoliverlarkin @sativadrummers and I as the performers and composers within our abandoned Saica paper factory venue.

The performance characterises hybrid animal / factory workers (a Pigeon, a Cat and a Kestrel) who haunt the old machines and reenact their ghostly rituals by night.

We all wore many hats during the conception of this piece. Alma, Fiona, Jill and I co choreographed the performance routine and foraged in the space for industrial and natural ephemera to be used in our installation. Jill and I made palladium glazed porcelain sculptures that hung in our space. I also had the pleasure of designing and creating our costumes with copper embellishments, modified helmets and a welding mask all found on the factory floor. Paul, Cam and Blade created an integrated drumming routine that brought so much life and structure to the piece.
