me reading babel by r.f. kuang over spring break and it literally changing my life 🤓🤓

everyone want to hate on r.f. kuang but no one wants to read past the confusing parts where she LITERALLY EXPLAINS EVERYTHING.

i LOVED this book. i truly have never thought of translation as the backbone of an empire. there were so many ideas and themes that are so applicable to today (i.e. colonialism STILL, racism, and AI lowkey????????? #silverisAI).

the characters were complex which i appreciated, but i do understand the critiques on them being somewhat one dimensional at times. by @em15book

happy (late) thanksgiving everyone 🦃🧡

after working hard these past few months with grad school interviews, endless midterm exams, and extracurriculars, i finally have time to devote to my hobbies 📖 🪴

this past week i’ve finished two books, both rated 4 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️!! the first one i finished is a rec by @khemille (thank you my queen): we have always lived in the castle by shirley jackson 🏰 🍄. it was so odd, and i loved it. the second one i finished was creep by emma van straaten. odd in a different way, but such an intriguing read. it had me hooked on page one !!!!!!!!

anyhow, i thought i’d leave this mary oliver quote for y’all as we head into finals week. don’t hesitate to choose joy :)

literally in the MIDDLE of an interview for grand school RIGHT NOW! BUT! feeling called to post so i must.

all of the questions ive been asked so far have been about assessing my values and such, and ive found that they all come back to love :,)

i feel like ‘tuesdays with morrie’ did an AMAZING job at explaining the love we have for others in our lives. is it the most eloquently written? no. however, did i love every minute of it? YES!

for all my POTA (!!) this is a sneak peak of our book of the month. NO SPOILERS!!!!!!!!

hello again! happy monday ☺️

i hope you have all had a FANTASTIC start to your school year, and have settled into a comfortable routine that still gives you room to enjoy hobbies such as readingggggg!!!!! with all my clubs starting back up, i struggled for a bit to find that routine, but i think i’m getting back into it now.

with that! let’s talk about my 2023 read ‘tender is the flesh’ by agustina bazterrica. i really enjoyed the social commentary of this, but especially how it hides as a dystopian novel. while some moments were poorly executed, i think it’s worth the read, especially if you enjoy metaphor heavy books (like me 😛).

i rated it 4/5 stars, just because i was nauseated, enthralled, and looking for more the entire time.

i can’t lie, i LOVE a polarizing book. 📖

a few years ago i read ‘the secret history’, and tbh… i didn’t really love it. the writing was immaculate, the plot was plotting, but something was missing for me. ☹️

i ultimately rated it 3 stars, as anything lower felt rude, but anything higher wouldn’t be fair.

for those who have read it, how did y’all feel????

mary oliver the woman you are…

hi everyone 👋🏼 after two weeks of settling in, i am finally out of my reading slump, and am excited to get posting again ☺️

in the past few weeks, i have:
1. finished moving into my apartment 😛
2. started my classes, and i LOVE them 🤓☝🏼
3. finished reading a few not great books (e.g. ‘when the coffee gets cold’ and ‘days at the morisaki book shop’), a few okay books (eg. ‘the vegetarian’ and ‘coraline’, and ONE AMAZING BOOK (‘when breath becomes air’) 🍃

right now, i’m listening to the invisible life of addie larue, and am eating it up 🥣 🎧. i’m also finishing up ‘being mortal’, and am learning so much about what it means to be in healthcare 🩺

FINALLY BACK! after helping my parents move from my hometown (bittersweet 🥲), to moving me and my sister into our new college apartments, i am finally able to relax, and readddddd. more than this, i found my book! for those not following along on goodreads, being mortal had lost its way from me for likeeeee 3 weeks 😋 but! she’s back! she was just hiding. with this, expect more updates soon.

i JUST finished ‘letters to a young poet’ by rilke, so seeing him mentioned in ‘devotions’ by oliver was such a fun coincidence !

both of these books were so lovely. poetry truly is such a marvelous thing.

horror has been a genre i have always wanted to get into, and there is no better time than the present!!!!!

things have gotten worse and other misfortunes 💻 🍎 🪱
this book was ODD!!!!! it had 3 short stories, all centering around connection in some way (across the internet, on an isolated island, and in a neighborhood). i enjoyed the ideas of each story, but ultimately, it fell flat. the writing was not consistent, and all the endings left me unsatisfied, but not in the good way. overall, 3 stars ⭐️
*i spelled gotten wrong in the post and i am too lazy to fix it IM SORRY.

the haar 🇮🇪👁️🩸
i was overall really impressed with this book!!! i really liked the female mc, muriel, who is a quaint, widowed, old woman living in rural ireland, where an american billionaire is trying to build a golf course. the story is compelling, and in gone girl fashion, “good for her”. 4.5/5 stars ⭐️

the eyes are the best part 🐟🔵✏️
this book actually made me squeamish, which i didn’t think was possible. ji-won is a freshman college student who undergoes an unraveling of sorts after her father leaves. she becomes fascinated with eyes after trying a fish eye for the first time, and it gets… interesting. i enjoyed the gradual buildup of this story, and always find an unreliable narrator fun. 4/5 stars ⭐️

i can’t wait to read more horror! let me know if you guys have any recs.

giovanni’s room 🚬🥐🍾

james baldwin… the genius you are. giovanni’s room is such a beautiful tale of desire, love, loss, disillusion, philosophy, poetry, and every earthy emotion in between.

this honestly didn’t feel like a lgbtq+ love story, it just felt like a story about the love people can feel for each other. it goes beyond gender, sex, race, or religion. it just is.

each page has a heartbreaking, world-ending quote that still sits heavy in my heart, almost a month after reading it. i think i am changed for the better, however, as reading this story changed my perspective on what it means to love another on an obsessive level right up until fears, insecurities, and responsibilities cause it all to come crashing down.

5/5 stars. everything from the plot, the characters, and the imagery and motifs deserves it. i wouldn’t be surprised if it was adapted into a film soon.

me when i remembered libraries exist…. YAYYYYYYYYY !!!!!

i was organizing my books in goodreads based on how i wanted to read them (physical tbr, digital tbr, kindle, etc), and completely blanked on libraries, even though i literally have a library card.

i went to the public library down the road from me to do some homework, and, huzzah, i remembered :)

i picked up two books, this being one of them. i’m only 20 pages in, but it is truly beautiful.

libraries are such a beautiful space that are underutilized in our community. in the search for a “third space”, why is a library not one?

let this be a reminder: USE YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY!!!!
