First Generation College Student: No one prepares you for the roads ahead, the rooms you’ll find yourself in that you’ve never imagined being in or even feel worthy of being. It’s all unseen, unknown, and unheard of … Until it becomes your reality. Prior to stepping foot on an HBCU campus, I had no idea what was ahead of me. I just knew that God made it possible for me to be in this position. The why? Unknown. The how? Unknown. I never imagined being elsewhere but home, only because that’s all I’ve known. The pressure that comes with it is heavy, but because God chose me to be the first Gen to start a new trend? There’s no need for pressure or fear. You won’t always know what it’ll look like, how you’ll get through anything you’ve never been through and that’s totally OK because of Him. I’m extremely grateful to be given the opportunity to be put in spaces that God believes I’m qualified for, no matter where I come from or how much I know. I realized any big opportunity I’m given is way bigger than me. Being the first will pave the way for those after me. I’m just glad to be chosen! To any First Generation students, you are chosen. Sit in that and allow it to keep you going! It’s unfamiliar, but just walk. You’ve never seen this before, but keep going.
