We can thank Dr. Courtney Knapp @anarchademic for pushing @c1typlann3r to *define* Embedded Planning praxis after a guest talk at @cpp_urp! That challenge led to @c1typlann3r’s definition . . .

What is Embedded Planning Praxis??

🎙In our most recent episode, we sat down with @c1typlann3r to discuss the planning praxis that he invented and defines as:

The planner moves with intention to work on the ground in the community in order to:

⚪️ understand people’s needs

⚪️ build trust and authentic relationships

⚪️ increase participation for marginalized communities through street-level engagement

⚪️ participate in daily community life and

⚪️ advance equity

It's a praxis because it puts theory into action to better the world.✨🌏🤝

Edward W. Soja (1940–2015) was an American geographer and urban theorist best known for bringing space and geography to the center of social and political theory. Influenced by Marxism, critical theory, and the work of Henri Lefebvre, Soja developed the idea of “spatial justice” to show how social inequalities are produced and reproduced through the organization of space. His major works include Postmodern Geographies (1989), Thirdspace (1996), and Seeking Spatial Justice (2010). Much of his work focused on cities, urban inequality, Los Angeles, and the relationship between space, power, and social justice.

Seeking Spatial Justice
Edward W. Soja argues that space is not neutral. Cities and landscapes are shaped by political decisions, economic inequalities, and social struggles, meaning that injustice is also produced through the organization of space. In Seeking Spatial Justice (2010), Soja develops the idea that where people live, work, move, and access resources matters for justice.

For Soja, spatial justice means challenging the unequal distribution of opportunities, resources, services, and power across geographical space. Seeking spatial justice therefore involves transforming the spatial structures that reproduce inequality and creating cities and societies in which people have a greater say in shaping the spaces they inhabit.

Rooted in Safety, Rising in Joy: Walk Audits During ICE Raids in South Central LA

10/3/26, 10:30-11:45am
APA CA Conference 2026, Los Angeles, CA

Speakers:
—Emily Ocegueda: Emerging Planner, Florence-Firestone resident
—Briana Villaverde: Urban Planner, Just4LA
—Alexandra Ramirez: Executive Director, Los Angeles Walks
—Jonathan Pacheco Bell, AICP: Co-President, Florence-Firestone Community Organization

Brief:
How do we plan for safe streets during ICE raids? This session explores a Walk + Roll audit in @FlorenceFirestone in South Central LA centering joy, creativity & safety over fear. Learn to use storytelling, reflection & zine-making to turn walk audits into healing tools for mobility justice.

Full:
How do we plan for safe streets when simply being in public space carries risk? In South Central LA’s Florence-Firestone community, active ICE enforcement disrupted a planned walk audit, forcing organizers & residents to reconsider not just how to assess streets, but what questions the assessment should begin with. Rather than centering the audit on traditional infrastructure deficiencies alone, Los Angeles Walks, Florence-Firestone Community Organization, the Vision Zero Artist in Residence & community members grounded the process in a 7-Generation visioning exercise that asked: For whom are streets meant to be safe & for what purposes?

This session shares how we restructured the Florence-Firestone Walk + Roll event to prioritize safety, community storytelling & reflection before observation. Participants engaged in a facilitated walk that uplifted lived experiences, memory, & care – followed by a creative zine-making session that helped translate stories into shared values, priorities, & visions for safer streets. Infrastructure conditions were still observed but interpreted through a relational & cultural lens instead of a checklist.

Panelists will reflect on how this approach shifted facilitation, documentation, outcomes, & what it revealed about safety, belonging, & accountability in communities facing surveillance and displacement. The session highlights both the possibilities & limits of vision-centered engagement in mobility planning.

Repost from @planningcollab 🔁

Community engagement is more than hosting a public meeting.

Effective engagement means meeting people where they are, removing barriers to participation, and creating spaces where residents feel heard and valued.

The goal isn’t simply participation — it’s trust.
