So thankful for the PACKED house at tonight’s Coffee Over Caskets. Thankful for the friends that lent fans, ac’s and time to making sure we were cool enough to continue. As always a thank you to EF for being our home. Thankful for my dear friend Nick and his incredible work at The Printers cabinet for driving up to speak with us.

Tonight Nicholas and his mother brought up probably 100 or so artifacts from the Victorian Mourning period. (Including a coffin we somehow managed to fit on the island…) We discussed how mourning then varies so differently from the sanitized and impersonal means of today. As well as what influenced our cultures view of death post Victorians.

Coffee Over Caskets thrives to bridge gaps between the death curious into the death positive. Tonights event alone brought in probably a dozen new friends and faces to the movement I had never met. Together we also raised about one hundred dollars for the Erie Cemetery Association.

Together we can create a world that is not afraid of death. But sees the sacredness in the grief and decay. Together we build towards the future of death positivity one cup of coffee and conversation at a time.

We can’t wait to see you at the next one.
Until then: your friend in life and death,

Above is a small collage of examples of Victorian Mourning pieces. The Victorian aristocracy made mourning a fashionable culture that dominated their society. From jewelry to intricate hair wreathes. Even the pins used to fasten clothing were mourning appropriate. This phenomenon ruled the greater part of Britain and the United States for decades. And even today colors how our cultures views and interacts with death.

If this period of history and art intrigues you I encourage you join us at our next Coffee Over Caskets meeting, Wednesday September 16th.

Join us as antique curator and owner of @theprinterscabinet , Nicholas Hess, allows us to explore his own collection. Together we will also discuss and dissect modern mourning pieces. And how we still interact with mourning as a muse for art.

This will also be a special Coffee Over Caskets as we’ll be raising funds for our beloved historical Erie Cemetery. Who after the devastation of the extreme storm last week lost dozens of their Mother Trees. Some of which were the oldest trees in the city. The damage done to the grounds, historic graves, and surrounding neighborhood is still be measured.

The grief we feel as Death Positive neighbors has been heavy. And many of us still cannot even look to the cemetery without feeling an immense and personal loss. So join us in shared communal grief. Talk death and mourning through art. And maybe make a new friend.

I hope to see you there. Your neighbor in death and grief,
-The Pentacle Pinup
