ICYMI, here I am, back in the studio! It’s never too late to treat yourself to a sentimental piece of jewelry, right?

After 18 months of being with my daughter full time, she is now in daycare a few days a week which means I get just a teeny bit of studio time back!

I rarely make myself jewelry, even though that’s how I got started in 2013! I want my push present to represent this new chapter in my life, and that means learning a technique I’ve been wanting to teach myself for years.

I have big plans for this ring: First, sand casting a signet ring I carved out of wax in solid 14kt gold. Then learning how to flush and bead set faceted stones, and finally taking my new skills to the ring and setting 4 heirloom diamonds in the signet.

I worked on the wax ring in July and then it just sat there for 2 months. In those months I started convincing myself that it was too big a project and I “couldn’t do it.” But that is just not true! It was time to beat the negative voices and just go for it.

Here is part 1 of me making my push present! Missed filming a couple steps but I love how it turned out! I’ll definitely be sharing more of this journey as I learn how to flush and bead set stones (wish me luck!)

I can’t wait to see the completed piece after what will likely be months of learning, trial and error, but I’m also so excited to see how learning this new skill will grow my offerings as I return to ember&onyx after so long!

Thank you all for sharing space with me at @shoppigment today!

I had so much fun teaching this group how to stamp & solder metal alongside the gorgeous potting station at Pigment’s Point Loma location.

We had so many positive attitudes, good energies, & super cute rings come out of today’s class.

I’ve been a full time mama for nearly 4 months now. My jewelry business has definitely taken a back burner as I try to keep up with my little growing baby! The 2-3 hours after Reya’s bedtime are cherished & used for a variety of things- a movie night with my partner, a workout, playing a video game, or time in my studio.

Basically all the e&o time I can afford right now is at night when baby is asleep. I baby wear during Reya’s naps & can do so many things, but obviously can’t hammer, stamp, or solder any jewelry (which is a whole lot of what I do!)

I snuck in a little night session this week, trying to get prepared for our upcoming market at @sdmademarkets in La Mesa on 5/10!

It was wild how much felt the same, when everything feels so different. Our unofficial e&o mascot, Nova, came in to keep me company. I set up my shelves so I could take inventory of what I have & what I need to make.

All the while, watching the baby monitor, still scared to hammer since she was asleep in the next room. Making necklaces while pumping…

I have gotten a few questions about if I’m “still doing jewelry” and it’s an overwhelming question! The truth is that this will always be a huge and important part of my life… but right now I am working to incorporate a new, much bigger identity into my life.

I need to have compassion and patience for how these identities merge. I need to feel comfortable with a slow pace in an uncertain direction. All while soaking up the baby snuggles.

I’m not complaining! I’m not gone. I’m just figuring it all out.

And in the meantime, I’m grateful for the beauty in some things feeling exactly the same while my world is completely different.

Hello friends! Catch me slinging jewels over at the No Man’s Land Film Festival next week with @mesarim_mm 🎥🧗🏽‍♀️

I’ll be crawling my way out of the newborn mom haze I’ve been in for the last 11 weeks & there is no where I’d rather be than with celebrating women & bipoc adventurers with my climbing community.

This will be my 3rd year in a row at the festival. I am always blown away by the films & have made connections each year that have remained treasured to this day ♥️

🤰🏽on maternity leave ✨

Hi friends! As you know, e&o is a one-woman show. I handle everything from designing, production, packaging- you name it!

But I’d been tag teaming the business with my little girl in my belly for most of 2024.

Now that she’s here, I am busy soaking up every minute of her squishy face & rolly rolls!

Not exactly sure when we’ll be resuming business as usual, but our first in person event will be Saturday, May 10th at the SD Made Spring Market held in downtown La Mesa. I am excited to get out & be a part of this maker community again!

We’ll have some new jewelry goodies available at shopemberandonyx.com prior to May, but it’ll take me a little time to get everything up & attem! Stay tuned 🙌🏾

In other news, the world is a difficult place at the moment. It’s been hard to tune into everything while trying to enjoy this little happy baby bubble with my partner.

Greg said it best- it feels like the end of the second movie in the trilogy where the bad guys are on top & you can’t see any way through the darkness.

But there’s just gotta be a third movie after this. One where we continue to fight to protect our values & our people. One where racism is wrong, people’s bodies are not policed, all love is celebrated, science is valued (& the list goes on). You can’t put people back in the closet.

It might be cheesy to quote here but as dark as these days feel, I do find comfort in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s words: “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”

My black, native, latina&brown friends, my queer, trans, enby friends, women identifying friends- these are scary times. You’re not alone. You deserve to be here & to celebrate your existence, your joy & your love. There’s nothing I feel like I can say to make this season feel any better but I have to believe in a more accepting & just world ahead. If not for myself & my community then for my little baby girl.

TLDR: e&o is on mat leave. Will be at SD Made Spring Market on May 10th. Currently enjoying time with the tiny human I created with my favorite person. Everything else right now, politically & environmentally, is pretty dark. But not forever 🙌🏾 taken in San Diego, California by @emberandonyx
