yeah, read that again. No acl. Had someone told me back in November that I would be at the Olympics, I wouldn’t believe it. There was no way I’d be ready for it. As my injury and procedure turned out to be more complicated than „just” an acl repair, I needed 2 separate surgeries. The plan was to get the new acl in March. So there was no way for me to compete in July. The dream was shattered. At least that is what I thought.
At some point right after my team qualified for the Olympics in February, I decided I couldn’t stay like this, be so sad and not do anything to change the situation. There had to be something I could try.

And there was - skip the second surgery and try it without an acl. Even though it might not work, and not many athletes take this route, with low odds, I still went for it. For the first time in a while, I had hope again.
For the next months I worked as hard as I ever have, Physically, Mentally, Emotionally. The dream was there again. This time has been so intense and transformative, and yet I’ve loved every second of it. The journey was one of many ups and downs, challenges, euphoria, mental battles, you name it.

But to have been in the Olympics alongside of my teammates means everything. From the games and big moments, to the laughs we share everyday, singing during bus rides, hanging out so much it felt weird to have a single room in Lille - Every hour of this rehab, the process of gaining strength back in my leg, every tear, and all of the pain was worth it.
If I could go back in time and tell myself that it would turn out okay, I would in a second. But sometimes, you need to go through the struggle and the hard times with nothing but the belief in yourself and the support of others to find what you’re truly made of.
For those who have been with me along this journey, thank you for believing in me, even on the days I didn’t believe in myself. I am so fortunate to have a great support system that helped me achieve this dream of becoming an Olympian. While we didn’t finish as far as we had hoped to, and the journey for German Basketball continues, my heart is still so full. ❤️ by @embessoir

Ein Weg, der Mut braucht: von ihren ersten Schritten im Basketball über die UCLA in Kalifornien bis auf die große internationale Bühne. @embessoir spricht darüber, was sie geprägt hat, warum es sich lohnt, die eigene Komfortzone zu verlassen und welche Kraft in einer neuen Basketball-Generation steckt.
