Glass Artist in Aotearoa, New Zealand

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Greg Wood and I had a fab couple of screenings of our film Speaking in Stone to the Karekare arts community and the former environs of John Edgar and Anne Robinson.

Thank you Sarah and Don - you are treasures for providing your incredible Karekare House to all the artists you’ve supported over the years, thank you Nic and Tom for helping us run the sessions, and thank you James for making this happen and creating a pop-up theatre with your ingenuity!

The film is a memorial to John Edgar’s creative process and work - shot by Greg in the sculpture workshop, as John left it, and with a soundtrack composed by me, but made from John’s tools.

I wrote all the music for this film using instruments made from recordings of John Edgar’s tools and workshop.

It’s a 20 minute experimental film, shot and edited by Greg Wood, about the last stages of John Edgar’s studio in Glen Eden as he left it, before it was dismantled and the stone given to artists around the county.

Karekare House.
Sunday 23rd August 4pm
1 Watchman’s Road, Karekare
(Please park at the beach car park).

Guests are welcome to arrive from 4pm for byo drinks and refreshment followed by a short talk and screening at 4.30pm.

We may need to run another session after, depending on numbers so please text your RSVP to Nicholas on 021 025 25278.

Thanks to James and Karekare House for making this happen!

Kia ora - another post - a different series. In much of my work as a glass designer and maker, I have tended to work in series. These ‘marui’ bottles (or ‘marui bin’= round bottle in Japanese), began when I lived and worked in Japan – 😉 OIOI …
I have explored the series over the years for various exhibitions, significantly for Venezia Aperto Vetro: the first international biennial for contemporary art in glass, which was held at the Palazzo Ducale and the Museo Correr in the San Marco quarter of the city of Venice, and at the Museo Vetrario on the nearby islands of Murano in September 1996….yes almost 30 years ago!
For ‘GATHER’, NZSAG Members Exhibition and Conference 2025 (Feb – March at @nzglassworks - Whanganui), I have revisited the ‘marui’ series of bottles once more. These are the newest iterations.

When the then Prince of Wales, Prince Charles was appointed by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as a Knight of the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Knight of The Thistle (the highest and oldest honour in Scotland) …I was a student at the Edinburgh College of Art. I was commissioned to make a gift to commemorate the occasion. I’d just begun my studies in glass - I made a clear crystal glass paperweight, it had a ‘steam stuck’ bubble inside with one surface cut, polished and engraved with the insignia of The Order of The Thistle by a fellow student. I then had the honour of presenting this commemorative token to Prince Charles, the future King while he was in Edinburgh. #memories #EdinburghCollegeofArt #KingCharlesIII #OrderofTheKnightofTheThistle

Some new jewellery pieces - ‘marui’ , round pendants #blownglass, cut and hand finished #handplaitedcord and #traditionallashing #binding
#glass #jewellery #plaiting #design #unique #contemporary #originalartwork #aotearoa #nz #style #colourist ...
I began this work in collaboration with @beaujackkey at @collabnz during the last International Symposium ....sharing and introducing new ideas and concepts, creating art and craft with skilled and talented makers from far and near, working in a range of mediums. In addition to the glass elements, I’ve been teaching myself to plait and bind and lash cord since then - results at last ! by @emcclureglass
