Self-awareness is a gift and a skill. But at some point, knowing where it all comes from stops being enough.

You can have a PhD in your own trauma and still flinch at the same things, choose the same people, feel like your body never got the memo your brain wrote years ago.

That’s because insight does not automatically create felt safety.

EMDR works with your nervous system directly — not just your story.

If you’re self-aware, high-functioning, and quietly exhausted from understanding everything but still feeling stuck, you’re in the right place.

Follow @emdrwithkat for more on healing childhood wounds, trauma patterns, and EMDR.

Some of us got called “old souls.”

People meant it as a compliment.

They saw the kid who was thoughtful.
Responsible.
Easy to be around.
Someone who understood adults better than other kids seemed to.

But sometimes what looks like wisdom is really adaptation.

Sometimes the child everyone admired for being “so mature” was quietly learning how to keep other people comfortable.

Not because they were born different.

Because that’s what helped them get through.

One of the hardest parts of trauma work is realizing there were qualities people praised you for that may have started as survival.

That doesn’t mean those qualities aren’t real.

It just means they came with a cost.

EMDR can help you go back to the places where your nervous system learned it had to grow up too fast, so you don’t have to keep carrying adulthood that was never yours to begin with.

If this one hit a little close to home, I’m glad you found this page.

The anxiety and depression are very real. But they may not be the whole picture.

You can understand your childhood, know it wasn’t your fault, and still feel like something bad is about to happen.

Trauma is associated with changes in brain structure and function, including systems involved in memory, emotion, and detecting danger. That doesn’t mean your brain is permanently damaged. It means there is more to treat than how you think about what happened.

This is where EMDR comes in.

We work with the memories and beliefs that still carry fear, shame, or that familiar feeling of “there’s something wrong with me.” The goal is for remembering what happened to feel less like living through it again.

You’ve worked hard to understand yourself. You deserve some relief, too.

Before you get upset: I’m not saying empathy doesn’t exist. I’m talking about growing up with childhood trauma and learning to watch everyone’s feelings because they affected how safe you were.

You can be deeply empathetic and also be on alert. Caring about someone and feeling responsible for keeping them okay aren’t the same thing.

This is the story of so many adults who feel a little lost in the world. Everyone knows they can count on you. You’re less sure who you can count on.

In EMDR, we can work with the experiences that made other people’s feelings your responsibility and your own needs feel like too much.

Picture this: you tell your therapist what happened for the first time. You’re bracing for more questions about what you remember.

Instead, she asks what feels true about you when you think about it now.

Because knowing it wasn’t your fault and feeling that it wasn’t your fault can be very different things. You don’t have to close that gap on your own before we begin.

That’s something we can work on with EMDR. And you don’t have to describe every detail out loud. You choose what you share.

This carousel is an imagined conversation, not a specific client’s story. It reflects something many survivors struggle with.

You can know why you do it and still feel unable to stop.

Some of your “weird quirks” may be ways you learned to stay safe. The problem is how automatic they still feel, even when you want to respond differently.

EMDR can help you work through what keeps setting that response off, so you have more choice in what happens next.

“Why didn’t she tell anyone?”

Reading the reports out of Cornell and LSU, I feel rage. And sadness. And exhaustion.

Because we keep asking survivors why they didn’t report, as if reporting guarantees protection. Or accountability. Or justice.

It means having your life pulled apart while everyone worries about his future.

Survivors see that. They see what happens to people who speak up. And then we act confused when they stay quiet.

Sometimes minimizing it is how you keep going. Sometimes you’re afraid you won’t be believed. Sometimes you have every reason to doubt that telling someone will make you safer.

When there are no meaningful consequences, the harm doesn’t end with one survivor. It leaves other people at risk. It tells the next survivor what they can expect.

I’m angry that we keep asking them to be brave instead of making it safer to speak.

You deserved protection then. You deserve support now. Whether you reported or not.

You may have spent so long making yourself easy to love that you started calling it your personality.

These patterns can have more than one cause. But if you recognize your childhood in them, you’re allowed to want something different now.

EMDR can help you work through what taught you to put yourself last.

CPTSD doesn’t just change what you think about your past. Prolonged trauma can change how your brain detects danger, handles emotion, and responds to reminders of what happened.

That’s why you can understand your trauma and still feel stuck. Insight matters. But understanding a response isn’t the same as changing it.

EMDR helps you process the experiences your brain is still responding to. In my EMDR intensives, we have longer sessions to focus on that work. If you’re in MA, book a free consult with me through the link in my bio. by @emdrwithkat
