“Hold my _ _ _ _”/Tejana Goth- I originally created this piece to talk about the toxic ingredients in most commercial beers. Over 7 years ago I quit drinking beer bc it hurt my stomach and made me feel like ass. Though it’s inconsequential to me now, I went down a rabbit hole about the ingredients in beer out of curiosity about what exactly my body was reacting badly to bc I wasn’t the only person I know who’s had sensitivities to it. What I found out is that a lot of the additives can make you as sick as the alcohol itself. Here are some of the most harmful chemicals in your beer and the major health problems they can cause- Let’s start with the fact that a lot of the grain is sprayed with pesticides, chlorine based herbicides, fungicides and insecticides and that the quality of the water it’s made with might be dutty/treated municipal water. It is also commonly treated with chemicals like calcium sulfate and calcium chloride. The residual chemicals in beer can cause cancer, neurotoxicity, gut micro biome damage and liver/kidney toxicity. Most beers also contain a slew of other additives like: -corn syrup/glucose syrup-linked to obesity, type 2 diabetes, fatty liver, insulin resistance -High fructose corn syrup(malt bevs)-obesity, metabolic syndrome -caramel coloring-linked to cancer -foam stabilizer-propileno glycol-can cause skin and gut irritation -silica gel-PPVP-plastic micro residue-health effects being studied -fish bladder-allergies-histamine intolerance -ascorbic acid-GI distress and kidney stones Not trying to vilify beer here but given the overwhelming potential health risks of all the additives, it would be of benefit to people to at least know what’s in their beer, specially if they’re drinking a lot on the reg. 🤷🏽‍♀️ Companies get away with lack of transparency under the argument that alcohol is technically not food so not liable to the same standards of requiring ingredients to be labeled on the bottles.
