Once 2026 | one day at a time 2025 —> My final callback for Girl was 30some hours into sobriety. I called a friend from the parking lot who reminded me “you just have to get through the next 15 minutes.” I had my 24 hour chip in my pocket, an opening night gift a beloved colleague had given me 3 years prior during our run of People, Places & Things. She might’ve been onto me, but these things take the time they take. I know I’m one of the lucky ones. I went into the callback, did my work, and let it go. I had to. I couldn’t see an hour, a day, a month ahead. Certainly not 11 months. Yet now it’s today.

It’s hard not to hear in the lyrics: “take this sinking boat and point it home, we’ve still got time” / “i wish i didn’t have to make all those mistakes and be wise” / “you have suffered enough and warred with yourself, it’s time that you won” / “are you really sure that you’d believe me when others say i lie?” / “please try to be patient and know that i’m still learning” etc. And wonderfully, beautifully even — tapping into Girl’s responsibilities as a caretaker, mother, daughter, friend, wife of an absent husband, and woman drawn to a man she just wants to help was a safe harbor amidst my own daily work. A different journey each day, rehearsal, performance. Some days recovery was enmeshed in the storytelling. Other days I’d leave Emi’s life at the door. Most days? The in-between.

This cast and creative team were a dream. Heather, Paige, Sam, Robert, Rex, Dianna, Jen, Andrés, Justin, Hailey, August, Bridgette, Christian, Carter, Ari, Amber, Faith, Jeremy, Jared, Sally, Colin, Ricky, David, Mira, Charles, Vivian and Anna, thanks for making this one so infinitely special and for (sometimes literally) holding my hand. You’re all some of the most talented, good, big-hearted people I’ve gotten to know.

I have no profundity to offer, but maybe one person sees someone who got through one day that turned into 335. Someone who got to inhabit a dream role and make it her own, muck included. Today’s all we’ve got. Thanks, Once, for being the role and experience that let me show up in a new way for the first time and a hyper-present way for the first in a long time. 💙 by @emierickson
