“Black Betty” is slang for a motorcycle, a bottle of whiskey, a whip, a musket—objects that can carry a sense of danger or something to be feared. The assignment was to embody that: not in a mean or aggressive way, but through a sense of power and presence.

The intention was to do only what was necessary to create that feeling without making the performance feel overly presentational. The power should come from the restraint—letting the movement, energy, and presence communicate the idea rather than forcing it. Don’t serve it up in a platter, but make people have to watch you dance. Everyone in this spotlight did exactly that and I have so many to share, starting with these 3 🖤🖤🖤
