Today we said goodbye to our sweet Charlie (Charles, Charlie-want-a-cracker) our 12 and a half year old brown labradoodle, and the absolute best boy.

Charlie was joy in dog form. All you had to say was “wanna go for a…” and he was already on his feet, ears up, tail wagging, ready for whatever adventure was coming next. The sound of his leash was enough to light him up. In his younger days he could chase down a soccer ball or tennis ball like it was his life’s mission. You could get his attention also by whispering “what’s that?” and he would perk up looking for a rabbit or other animal.

He was our constant companion. Wherever we were, Charlie was close by. He was a gentle giant who truly knew no strangers. Every person was a potential friend, and every friend deserved a warm welcome. He was the best doggy sibling to Emily, patient and steady. If you stopped scratching his head too soon, he would gently place his paw on you as if to say, “Excuse me, you’re not finished yet.” That was Charlie. Loving, steady, and always connected.

He left his mark on everyone, including his new buddies Gus and Carlos, who looked up to him in their own way. He showed them how to be calm, kind, and loyal. He was a quiet role model just by being himself.

We find comfort picturing him reunited with his best friend Molli, catching up over a long game of tug of war and fighting over a tennis ball like old times. Our hearts are broken, and the house feels different without him, but we are so grateful for every walk, every paw nudge, every ordinary day made better because he was in it.

We will carry you with us forever, Charlie. Thank you for being our best friend. by @emily.goodner
