2026 Sports in Kansas Defensive Player of the Year – Emily O’Brien, Remington (2A)

Emily O’Brien capped a strong career at Remington as one of the most consistent two-way players in 2A, leading with production, toughness, and versatility.

O’Brien averaged 19.0 points, 8.1 rebounds, 3.3 steals, 3.8 assists, and 1.3 blocks per game, impacting every phase of the game while anchoring Remington on both ends. She finished her career with 1,285 points, 560 rebounds, and 279 steals, helping lead the Broncos to 66 wins.

A former Halstead student through middle school before moving to Remington, O’Brien comes from a strong basketball background. Her brother, Andrew O’Brien, a former All-State player at Halstead now playing overseas professionally, has played a key role in her development and love for the game.

“We won 19 games this season and had an amazing group of girls, coaches, and a community that always supported us. It didn’t end the way we wanted, but it was a season to be proud of.”

A multi-sport standout and state champion in track, O’Brien will continue her basketball career at Northeastern State.

The Defensive Player of the Year selections are not done strictly by classification. Instead, we select five players statewide as part of our All-Classes Defensive Team.

Our process/criteria/guidelines guarantees representation across the state:
• At least one player has to be from large schools (6A/5A)
• At least one player has to be from mid-sized schools (4A/3A)
• At least one player has to be from small schools (2A/1A-I/1A-II)

The remaining selections are awarded to the best overall defensive players in Kansas, regardless of class.

This allows us to recognize elite defensive impact at every level of the state while still honoring the very best players, no matter where they play. by @emily0b3

SIK Preseason Player to Watch: Emily O’Brien enters her senior season at Remington as one of the most decorated multi-sport athletes anywhere in Class 2Al. A long-time standout for the Broncos, she’s coming off a junior campaign where she averaged 14 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 3.6 assists while earning first team all-league honors, first team all-2A from Sports in Kansas, and a spot as a SIK 2A Player of the Year finalist. She’s also one of the elite hurdlers in Kansas, winning the 100H state title last spring and finishing runner-up in the 300H. Emily gives Remington a true two-way anchor, scoring inside, facilitating in transition, and defending multiple positions. Signed with Northeastern State University, she’s stepping into her final year with confidence and a clear mission. “I’m really excited for the upcoming season and the chance to improve my skills. My main goal is to contribute positively to the team’s success, and I’m ready to work hard and support my teammates in every way possible. I believe that with dedication and teamwork, we can achieve great things this season. Our goal this year is to win state.” Emily’s competitive drive runs deep, growing up in a basketball family where both parents and both siblings played in college, with her brother now playing professionally in Germany. She’s also spent years playing with Next Level, a summer program she’s been with since fourth grade and credits for connecting her with teammates who share the same passion and goals. #sportsinkansas
