A surprise hang with the fabulous @gayance during my radio show at @esrlive a couple of weeks ago!! Doing radio shows especially in stations on my travels remains one of my fave activities… a way to connect and share music. This one is now on YouTube as well! Link in my bio or send me your favourite sound related emoji and I’ll DM you the link…

Enthusing about @hey.bony whose set at @mil_lisbon was excellent

It's a Lisbon special! DJ, producer, and bassist Marla Kether joins Emily to break down the influences on her EP 'Luso' on Strut, written between the Portuguese capital and Brazil. Plus, Emily takes you into the heart of the city, reflecting on the MiL Lisboa festival and hearing from local artists Zino and PXMP.

If you’re thinking about starting a radio show, want to keep getting better at hosting one, or are questioning whether to keep going – this article is for you!

I spoke to @refugeworldwide , @martha_radio and @emily_dust who represent radio stations across Europe, the US and the UK and each of them gave their thoughts on WHY YOU SHOULD CONSIDER BECOMING A RADIO DJ.

Bits of advice are scattered throughout this @alphathetaglobal article alongside some words of wisdom which all ultimately celebrate why this medium has been trumping all other forms of music journalism for the past 120 years, and why there is no better time than NOW to have your own show.

I can only speak for myself but radio is the one source of music discourse and discovery that has been with me for as long as I can remember. From the days of listening to the top 40 every Sunday to loving the DIY side of homemade broadcasts like Young Echo radio on Itunes podcasts and later tuning into NTS shows like Melon Magic, TTB, 72 Nations w/ CKtrl, and Beatrice Dillon, to then falling in love with everything and anything on Noods and now having my own show on AAJA. Radio is simply the best 🏆

thanks to the industry pros in this article for sharing their advice and thoughts. there are so many people doing great things with radio so, if nothing else, I hope this feature encourages you to go and find the radio station for YOU and give it all your lovin.

whether as a listener or a dj, there is a station out there with your name on it

✨🎟️✨

share your favourite shows and/or radio stations in the comments! (i love recommendations!) and head to either my stories now or my linktree later to read the article OR drop a fruit in the comments and i’ll send it to you 🫶

Glastonbury 2016… one of the really muddy years. So muddy the cars on the roads in were at a standstill. I had to sleep in a colleague’s tent who I’d randomly bumped into (thanks @lawlessyo) because mine was in my friend’s car and stranded outside the gates…

My main set that year was in a tent. Playing Glastonbury is still a big deal however many times you’ve played but it was only my second year playing so I was feeling the pressure. It was raining so much that I knew it would be packed. Result! However, 10 mins before my set started the sun came out and people literally flooded out of the tent. I ended up playing to about 10 people and I’d been too nervous to eat beforehand so was also very hungry. Not the best frame of mind to try and salvage a set! This was also the year @jculpeppermusic and I and his wheelie suitcase had an epic journey out!

I love failure stories for many reasons and Glastonbury is one of those places where so much mad stuff happens. So I’m very excited to be hosting a talk all about Glastonbury fails for the wonderful @rumshackglasto in aid of the equally wonderful @refugeecommunitykitchen tomorrow at @thefoxandfirkin. I am chatting to three legends @jamesbarnett1974 @ayosartofgiving @steve_bedlam and can’t wait to dig into their tales. Come thru, the rest of the lineup is really really good and it’s in aid of an important cause.

Also… for the record all my sets at Rum Shack have been corkers!! by @emily_dust

Had an amazing week in one of my fave cities. @mil_lisbon is all about celebrating Lusophone talent, so the programming was well up my street! Swipe thru for some of my fave picks of the festival and other adventures…

Shout out to everyone I met and hung out with too. A lovely friendly week with a lot of shared taste… @branko @alexritaa @opium_hum @ritamaia___ @saya__dj @djcaljader @ellenbereal @ivan_halen_semeria @pxmp.wav @xavierblk @lolalapiower @floremusic @capitanacapitanacapitana @keepitlowprofile @rainnerbrito @revolutz @rastronaut @maboku_cdm @apg__otyefada @aprilclarewelsh

@casa.capitao where MiL conference takes place is in a really industrial part of town. It’s run by the same people who were behind Music Box, the a legendary club in the centre of Lisbon which closed a couple of years ago.

I was very proud to be asked to host Branko’s keynote speech. We’ve been friends since 2009 (when I invited @burakaofficial onto djedu’s BBC Radio 1Xtra show to play their favourite kuduro songs) so there was a lot to get thru!

New mixer who dis? The talk was in an old bread factory and a lot of the equipment is still there.

Also hosted a fascinating conversation on human curation with @opium_hum and @alexritaa who have very distinct and holistic approaches to curating. We covered a lot; AI beyond the aesthetic problems, building offline communities, visa support for artists from the global south and taking creative risks.

Poster child!

When in Lisbon… had to play this UK twist on a Lisbon classic…

And a lot of other drummy stuff!

Spent far too much money on records at @flurdiscos and @tabatorecords - didn’t go for this tho, despite the amazing cover and th fact it was in both shops!

Never mind vinho verde… the cocktails at @durodematar.pt were mind blowing! Delicious tacos too.

And a radio station inside the restaurant! Shout to @esrlive - show is coming very soon! And @gayance who I found in studio doing her pre performance prep…

@gayance absolutely smashed it… so much herself onstage and proper vibes. Incredible band too!

Highlight of the festival was @biasoull - amazing new take on funk.

October is a month of talking, playing music and full circle moments!

Delighted to be back in Lisbon, hosting two amazing conversations… also to be playing again at the incredible @casa.capitao again 💥

I’ve also got a new mix going out which is all about the power of radio…

Later this month I’m talking to some of the nicest people in the biz about the realties of the world’s favourite festival… Glastonbury with the @rumshackglasto crew

And I’m going to Gran Canaria for @womex.expo on and hosting some fascinating panels - last time I was in Gran Canaria I was also playing WOMEX. Heard great things about @fresh.bissap so I can’t wait to play there either!

As ever, my DMs and email is open if you want me to come and talk or play music 🫡🫡🫡

My Lisbon debut earlier this year… can’t wait to get back to @casa.capitao for another set!

Playing Casa Capitao in July celebrating 20 years of @burakaofficial 🔥🎂

Last time I did a panel in Lisbon with @brankoofficial (and the lovely @buruntuma, also pictured) it was at @womex.expo - this carousel is becoming quite meta

Did you know I do a podcast all about DJ culture? It’s International Podcast Day so I thought I should let you know!

#podcast #dj #podcasting #internationalpodcastday #interview

It’s two seasons deep and I’m very proud of it

Mixmag have featured us (as have RA, Electronic Beats and a national newspaper… swipe thru for this)

I took it to We Out Here when my second kid was 4 months old… a big logistical challenge but was important to me to keep my career going in a way that felt sustainable

I arranged syndication on British Airways and Aer Lingus, which is massive for an independent podcast.

Here’s a review in Mixmag

And also in The Observer

@cocoem__ was an incredible episode

@tinaedwardsdj was full of brilliant advice. FISH stands for “f*** it, say hi” - encouragement to any DIY artist to just approach people you want to approach… what’s the worst that can happen?

@itsyasmin pulled no punches talking about how promoters and clubs can better support female headliners. Sadly even more important than ever

@djtarget and I had a good old chat about the power of radio to connect and create opportunities for new artists…

You actually don’t need much to start a podcast… part of my work is as a podcast consultant and you really can do one on any budget: the key is consistency.

Some wicked guests will feature on Series 3… always open to discussing partnerships, podcast swaps etc too!

Tina Edwards also joins as this week's collector selector, to celebrate that her Bandcamp Selects show will now air weekly.
