My favorite little human is 3 today!
What an adventure it is to be a parent.
To love someone who will most likely break your heart countless times, but also heal it in ways you never imagined.
What a beautiful and rewarding three years it’s been learning to see the world through my son’s eyes.
Grateful for this journey we’re on together.

Today’s my dad’s 68th birthday. He’s been gone for eight years, but today is a day worth celebrating.

Timothy Aukerman had a way of making people feel seen and loved. When I was a teenager it embarrassed me but now I recognize what a gift it was to acknowledge and connect with every person he came across. From the individual working at Aldi, to the children at church, to my friends coming over for dinner, he truly loved people. He had no shortage of friends, yet he was always drawn to those who needed someone in their corner.

He was a pastor, a thinker, a reader, a tea drinker, a gardener, a music lover, a kayaker, a hiker, a bee keeper, a writer, a great cook, a true lover of life. It is such a privilege to have been his daughter and to have seen modeled for me what love looks like in action. What grace looks like. What an apology looks like. What it looks like to have fun and be intentional with this one short life. At the sudden end of his life, we really were at that point in adulthood where I considered him my friend and loved talking with him, reading books with him and realizing how cool he really was. I spent so many hours with him because he was invested in me and sought out common ground. Now as a parent I can see how intentional his love was and I will never forget that.

I read today that grief is love wearing a heavy coat. That truth settles deeply. I’m wearing that heavy coat today (and really, every day), and I am so, so grateful for my dad and the life he lived. by @emilyaukerman
