The Archie comics have such surprising longevity. From both iterations of Sabrina the Teenaged Witch to The CW’s Riverdale and countless spinoff shows and movies, the people crave those spunky, all-American high school kiddos from the 1940s. Which is why no one knew how to respond when Josie and the Pussycats’ rockstar-anticapitalist-camp-palooza came out in 2001. Its glossy production and tongue-in-cheek “product placement” caused Roger Ebert to claim that “Josie and the Pussycats are not dumber than the Spice Girls, but they’re as dumb as the Spice Girls, which is dumb enough.” In my youth, this devastated me because I was a “smart cinephile,” but I loved Josie. In my adulthood (aka ~ my smartest cinephile era ~), however, I relish in the misunderstood bimbofication (pussification?) of late-stage capitalism and MTV-lead apathy that so easily flew over the tiny head of a man like Roger Ebert who so happily questioned the intelligence of multiple groups of hilarious women.
Featuring the musical stylings of not one, but TWO of the best fictional bands ever (DUJOUR MEANS FRIENDSHIP), Josie and the Pussycats has a soundtrack made for a pop-punk princess recorded by Letters to Cleo and distributed via CDs, one copy of which was completely worn out by an 11-year-old me. The performances are equally as iconic as the wardrobe, and the script is a secretly brilliant critique on group think, consumerism, and subliminal messaging. But even if you’re smooth brained like Mr. Ebert, the film is a helluva fun romp that perfectly encapsulates the glitz and glamour of the VH1-stained early aughts.

Join us Friday to watch Crossing Delancey with a local short “Mirror Kisses” + Q&A with director Anthony Grosse before the movie and pickles by @pickleenvyatx.

Joan Micklin Silver is one of the great independent directors of the 1970s and 1980s. Overcoming many studio executives who believed a woman director was just “one more obstacle the film industry didn’t need,” she began her career as a writer, gaining credibility at The Village Voice. She soon turned to directing and found success with Hester Street, which earned an Academy Award nomination.

When she went on to make Crossing Delancey, a charming film about a Jewish woman navigating her love life, studio executives claimed the film was too “ethnic.” The project was nearly canceled until Steven Spielberg stepped in to advocate for it. Crossing Delancey became Silver’s biggest success and is still regarded as one of the great romantic comedies.

After hitting the road to SF we headed to the legendary Maryland Film Festival @mdffparkway where the film was screened as a part of the “best of the fest” block. Maryland was a fantastic audience for the film and we loved getting to know a city and festival that has become legendary among independent filmmakers. I’ll never forget John Waters appearing like a ghost in the rafters sitting up in the balcony near us.

After Maryland we immediately took the film home to Texas for the Hill Country Film Festival @hc_film_fest where we finally connected with a Texan audience in Fredericksburg. Ten years earlier Hill Country Film Festival was the first film festival that I had premiered my work at after film school; it felt full circle to return with something that had showcased so much growth in us as filmmakers. by @emilybasma
