Happy Father’s Day to all the dads and father figures! I’m so grateful for my dads in my life. And thankful to have an amazing dad for our kids. Truly blessed to be married to my best friend and that we are a good team as we go through the ups and downs of life growing in our love for Jesus, each other, our kids, and family and friends. by @emilybuscema

This is spring break in the California desert.

It’s pushing 80° by 6:30 am and over 100° during the peak of the day. My kind of weather! We’ve been in the pool pretty much nonstop since we got here. We come up with lots of games to play, various breath-holding contests, and the kids try to beat me in the water. They know they can’t, as I grew up in the water. It drives them crazy and I love it! There’s not much I can beat my kids at anymore, so I’ll gladly take it.

The kids walk to get ice cream every day, sometimes more than once. We’re barefoot all the time, and rarely have a shirt on. Shoes consist of flip flops.

This spot in the desert boasts bighorn rams that come down from the hills, stroll across the golf course, and sometimes get into it with each other. It sounds like gunfire when they strike one another with their horns. We stop and watch them, just like visitors watch the deer and other wildlife at our house.

The sunsets out here in the desert are unreal. It’s hot, and the sun is very intense, especially for a bunch of pale-skinned folks from way up north.

We’re outside from morning to bedtime. Limited to no screens, no schedule, just great family time in a beautiful and warm environment.

I need this more than I realize. My family knows full well how much I struggle with the lack of sunshine. It’s obvious, although I try to hide it. An Italian kid growing up in sunny San Diego can’t hide it! We have almost no plans during our break. I’m trying to slow down, be fully present with my family, and reset a bit. Ok, reset a lot! I know we’ll be back to school and work sooner than we’d like, but for now, this is exactly where we need to be.

I’m so thankful for our gracious family for letting us enjoy this amazing place. taken in California by @emilybuscema

We’ve had a weird week.

Thursday was my wife’s birthday, @emilybuscema The plan was to hit the mountain together. Then the windstorm knocked out power and shut it down. No mountain for us.

Friday they didn’t open until 3 and closed at 6, again because of power issues and weather conditions. Not worth the drive plus I had the Daddy Daughter dance at church with my daughter. No way I’m missing that!

Saturday was my birthday. (My wife is 2 days older than me!). We loaded up the car with 8 people ready to ride all the fresh powder. We’re talking over 3 feet which this season, hasn’t really happened. Car wouldn’t start. First time ever. Got that resolved, then got all the way up there and the entire valley had lost power again. They also had an inbounds avalanche the day before that caused problems. So we turned around, went home, and played in the snow at our house. Still fun. But not the plan.

Today I grabbed a buddy’s pass to a different mountain, went up solo, and got some turns in. It was absolutely gorgeous. More skied out than I would want but the entire mountain was open and I hit hard. Exactly what I needed.

Four days of trying to make it work. Four pivots. Sometimes things just don’t go your way and you can either sit at home frustrated or figure out a different path to the same goal. For me that goal was simple… Get on the mountain.

Business works the same way. Plans fall apart. Conditions change. The people who figure it out aren’t the ones with the perfect plan. They’re the ones who keep adjusting until they find a way.

Yes, I will find a way to bring everything back to snowboarding. All life’s lessons can be taught on the mountain, right? taken in Top Of Schweitzer Mountain by @emilybuscema
