When Kelli told me on Saturday that she ran into Camila Cabello the night before at a hotel bar, my first thought was, “Like, *the* Camila Cabello?” (Yes, truly.) Upon recognizing Camila, Kelli went up to her to tell her how she was doing her father/daughter dance to Camila’s song, “First Man.”

Camila was in town for a friend’s wedding (also on Saturday), but instantly wanted to sing it live for Kelli and her dad, Mike. They exchanged phone numbers and, by Saturday morning, it was “this crazy thing that had happened and thank goodness someone got a photo of them talking because no one would believe it otherwise.” There was hum that perhaps Camila would be able to come, but it was all very up-in-the-air based on timing and, of course, never the faintest expectation when Kelli had told Camila about the dance song the night before.

When the ceremony ended around 4 PM, there was a team huddle because it had just been confirmed that Camila would actually be coming. We had about 30 minutes for guests mingle and enjoy cocktail hour while vendors coordinated with Camila and her management team for the music file, ideal placement (which was not in front of the parking lot, haha, but I actually love how that ended up; very genuinely telling the story of the impromptu nature of everything), and taxi ETA.

Camila and her boyfriend, Henry, arrived at 4:30 and @rileymullane, the DJ, got her set up with a mic and then made the announcement for the guests. Camila was the sweetest soul and, before singing, told the story about how her and Kelli met the night before and how Camila wrote “First Man” for her own dad and what that relationship means to her and dedicating it “to daddy’s girls.” Camila sang and they danced and we awed at what a truly unexpected surprise of a day it had turned out to be.

Thank you, Camila, for the most special and memorable father/daughter dance ever.

I had a whole thing to say about this beautiful family, but then I saw Bethany just sent me this note:

“I shouldn’t be surprised at all after all these years, but I am blown away!! You captured so many AMAZING photos which is remarkable considering all the energy, chaos, and challenges you were up against :) I have no idea how you work this kind of magic.

“We love how you continue to freeze time for us with these photo sessions and provide us with so many fun memories we can look back on for years to come!”

I’ve been lucky enough to have worked with them since the days of their engagement and now, twelve years later, look at their family!!!! 😍

Of all the trails we’ve trailed around here, we haven’t ever hiked the Cangleska Wakan acres. With the Most Perfect Fall Weather™ in play right now 🍂, yesterday seemed like a perfect day to go explore after school.

I did enough research ahead of time to print out a map and use a highlighter to mark our route. That turned out to be in vain as the actual trails don’t really follow the map trails (?) as in, here’s a Y in the road, but the map says to go straight which isn’t even an option. 🤪

I had very specifically chosen a short route knowing the kids would be tired after school and wanting to give us just a quick little get-outside breather, but…well, it turned into quite a bit more of an ordeal than anticipated. Once I knew we were fully off of our route, I pulled up my phone gps to try to guide us. It didn’t help with the trails, but at least we could keep ourselves directionally oriented, at times just tromping through the woods on no trail whatsoever.

Now none of this in itself was reason to panic (contrary to my kids’ opinions), however, the sun sets quite early now and it gets dark in the woods much quicker than actual sunset so all I kept thinking was, “I have to get my kids out of here before it’s dark.” (One time, before we had kids, Kevin and I went on a hike in the fall and it got dark. Both of our phones were on low battery so we had to ration flashlight use on them and try to find our way back in the dark. At one point, we turned on a phone light and there were dozens of reflective beady eyes staring back at us—a large group of deer it turned out—and my soul momentarily left my body. I was remembering that last night, though I couldn’t share that memory with the kids at the time!)

Anyway, you should’ve heard our shouts of joy when we stumbled upon part of a well-marked trail (of which there were *few*) and mapped exactly where we were so we could get back out.

Now petitioning for Johnson County to put up trail markers out there because, truly, it’s gorgeous, but also, I never ever want to get lost in those 132-acres again. The kids aren’t going to trust me on a new hike anytime soon. 🫣 by @emilycrall
