Everyone deserves someone who sees how amazing they are, so we are working to fix up a good friend! (We got such a great response from our last post and our pal is single again, so we’re sharing this a second time.)

Here’s how you can help:
-Share this post on your social channels.
-Forward this to at least five people.
-Send good vibes.

If you want to know more about our buddy, or are interested yourself, email OurWonderfulFriend@gmail.com and we would be happy to send over some specifics.

Who she’s looking for:
-Male identifying
-38–55ish years old
-Based anywhere
-Progressive, consistent voter, career-oriented
-Cultured, curious, and up for new adventures
-Dog lover
-Judaism is not required, but understanding Judaism is a plus

A little about the person we’re fixing up:
Our friend is loved for being herself—she’s kind, funny, worldly, and genuinely invested in people. She’s professionally sucessful, curious about the world, and values honesty, generosity, and enthusiasm. She’s the type of person who really shows up for her friends, builds quality relationships, and isn’t afraid to try new things. She’s into sports (but not glued to ESPN), and would happily trade small talk for meaningful conversation. She also loves the finer things in life, so if you’re thrifty or scared of a big spender, this is likely not the right match for you.

So…will you help us cast this net far and wide? Please email us at OurWonderfulFriend@gmail.com if you or someone you know is worthy of our pal.

With gratitude and excitement,
@rebeccagoodstein + Em

Our *very* wonderful nanny Jheny is looking for a new family to work with beginning this Fall. I can’t say enough about Jheny (but I will try). She’s kind, dependable (SO DEPENDABLE!), responsible, thorough, organized, and warm. I have never worked with someone who takes as much pride in her work as Jheny. Jheny has been part of our family for the past three years and I can’t imagine life without her. Alas, I am excited to help connect her with a new fabulous family so other folks can enjoy the magic that is Jheny. (Note: Jheny is looking for a new family to work with for 40+ hours per week. She has a car and regularly drives Edie around.) If you’re interested in chatting with her, her number is 202-250-0381. by @emilygoodstein

Where to begin with @beingbrina’s @democracycreators Joy Summit? Last night’s kickoff dinner was other worldly. But Sabrina made it a reality right at @lardentedc! The room was filled with creative world repairing people including @wellreadblackgirl @bridgetmarieindc @dcfashionfool @theanelamalik @adjournwithtonia @imaniathome @smartinbrough @marsgreen @deedwyerjonts @blkflwrmrkt. We ate delicious food and even got joy portraits taken with a bubble background.

Do you like the idea of this event? The next two days of programming are open to the public at the MLK Library! creatorsfordemocracy.org

PS look at that great spot I got directly in front of the restaurant!

What a weekend!

We kicked it off on Friday with the Juneteenth festivities at Smithsonian's @nmaahc with our pals Kiki and @mayavizvary. (Thanks to @ucsneaker for the invite!) Then we headed to the @rockcreekpool for some Shabbat Shswimming and dinner poolside. 🏊‍♂️

Saturday started with a trip to @saintgeorges.dc in Eastern Market and the #Basquiat inspired open studio time at the @hirshhorn! We spent the afternoon with one of our favorite 2.5 year olds, Fí, in Takoma Park and closed things out with breakfast for dinner with @hlgoldstein84 and fam! 🧇

Sunday was a “low key” day. We headed downtown again for @suffsmusical with @jjoteal and @go4ridgeback (and a special Q and A with the @womensmonument ED, Anna) then home for a some BBQ à la Uncle Sean and Edie/ @okorin traditional viewing of @beyonce’s 2024 Christmas halftime show.

Nothing says Happy Father’s Day like smoked meat, a historically significant musical, and @blueivycter doing a line dance. by @emilygoodstein

That’s a wrap on four years at @tsns.dc! (Plus a few bonus weeks of camp this summer…)

I’ve said this before, but it bears repeating: TSNS didn’t just help transform Edie from and mostly-bald two-year-old into the strong and hilarious almost-six-year-old she is today. It also taught me how to have a child in school. From figuring out what to pack for lunch to learning the surprisingly nuanced rules of playground footwear, Team TSNS patiently guided us through it all. And perhaps most importantly, TSNS taught me what it feels like to leave Edie with loving, trusted teachers and know she’s going to have a wonderful day…

We are so grateful for the teachers, staff, and community who nurtured our mini person (and gently trained her parents) over these past four years. What a special chapter this has been. ❤️

When I was pregnant, I’d often tell @theronkelly that one of my biggest fears is that Edie wouldn’t be funny. Specifically, that she wouldn’t have good comedic timing. (Of course this worry only emerged after we knew she was healthy etc.)

In fact, while I was in labor I have a very clear memory of telling the nursing team at GW Hospital about this concern between contractions. They laughed and weren’t sure if I was serious. But this was a legitimate concern. I feel like humor is one thing that AI can never take from us. And it’s a quality that both accentuates other positives in people and if anything happens to be lacking, humor mitigates that too. Like if you can laugh about it, it doesn’t matter as much that you’re bad at math, maybe? (And she’s Ron’s child so we knew there was a heavy genetic predisposition for sarcasm.)

So, when I read Edie’s end of year recap from her fabulous teacher Fiona, I couldn’t help but appreciate the following:

“In the classroom, Edie’s love of language and storytelling shines brightly. She eagerly participates in conversations and group discussions, sharing thoughtful, detailed, and often hilarious observations. Her storytelling abilities are especially impressive, as she vividly recalls details, builds suspense, and captivates her listeners with confidence and personality.”

Thanks for humoring me 😉 as I use social media to process the end of Edie’s nursery school career. Today is the last day and I simply can’t believe it.

Update! Our friends avoided eviction because of the generosity of this stunning community. Thank you to everyone who shared and donated.

Urgent request for help:

Our good family friend DH, his wife K, and their school age children are facing eviction *today.* They need to raise $6,000 by the close of business to keep a roof over their heads.

We have identified a nonprofit organization that is working to contribute part of the amount needed, but we are still trying to raise the remaining funds as quickly as possible.

If you are able to help, any contribution of any size will make a meaningful difference. Please send your donation directly to my brother-in-law Sean Ford via Venmo: Sean-Ford-15.

If you are unable to donate (or even if you are), please consider sharing this message with your network. Time is critical, and every donation and social share helps.

Thank you for your generosity, compassion, and support. by @emilygoodstein

This year, my birthday felt really complicated. I’m still not exactly sure why. Maybe I’m growing out of the giant party and more into the nap and manicure approach. The combination with Mother’s Day is both wonderful and once again nuanced/complex/layered.

I’m so glad we celebrated as we did. And also so glad the weekend is over. Back to the regularly scheduled program of nursery school events, playdates, and @greatergoodstrategy client pitch meetings.

Speaking of GGS clients, we did spend some time at the @dcdiaperbank volunteering and eating bagels and it was so wonderful. ALSO pictured: a birthday workout with @jpafrom716 of @hidden_gyms fame, lunch at @cheesecakefactory, Shabbat with the Kallus/Torches, and an impromptu BBQ on our new grill! Then Mother’s Day brunch with the entire Ford Kelly Rosenfeld Goodstein Vizvary fam. by @emilygoodstein

Yesterday was Susan Gutchess’s celebration of life. I cried through almost one full box of tissues (very thoughtfully provided by @stjohnsgeorgetown) remembering our generous, hilarious, and snarky co-conspirator.

Susan built the planned giving industry, and more specifically the planned giving programs at the @savingplaces and @nature_org. We sometimes talked about fundraising when we’d get together, but had more fun updating each other on the happenings within the @ppmwdc board (where we were both members, then she became the chair)!

When @theronkelly and I planned a major remodel to our house in Columbia Heights in 2018, Susan and Helen invited us to stay at theirs while they spent part of the year in NH. After living at Casa Gutchess Ingalls for several months, Susan and Helen returned from NH and we met for dinner to say thanks. Ron and I still laugh thinking about Susan’s first question:

“Did you see the Grandma Moses?” We’d walked by it hundreds times and never once noticed this pretty significant piece of art hanging in the hallway situated right next to family photos and other interesting artifacts from decades of global adventures.

Other things I’ll remember about Susan:

Taking tap lessons at the same dance studio. She was a very devoted student but never progressed past the beginner level.

Susan’s love for Helen and their sweet pups.

@rebeccagoodstein and Susan adopting the @metroforward 38B bus station outside their Ballston office, complete with trash grabbers, a personalized sign, champagne at the ribbon cutting, and reflective vests.

Introducing me to the Pisco Sour after their trip to Peru.

Being car twins. We both drove a 2010 Toyota Corolla, except Susan’s had a piece or two of the bumper missing which she chalked up to “only cosmetic damage” and never attempted to fix.

I rarely interact with friend of the nonprofit ecosystem who didn’t know Susan Gutchess. We’ll miss you, friend.

On Friday, @theronkelly, @rebeccagoodstein, and I had the honor of being the “Shabbat family” in Edie’s class. It’s hard to believe this was the last time we’ll visit @tsns.dc for this special tradition! After lighting the candles and saying the Shabbat blessings, I got a chance to read E is for #ElissaFroman out loud. Then Ron read the class a book about #ZahaHadid, obviously.

I know EF would be so proud of the little activist we are raising (and also totally mortified that I wrote a book all about her). Thanks to Edie’s fabulous teachers, Faith and Fiona, for the warm Megalim welcome and for being so supportive of my recent project.

PS there’s also a horribly embarrassing photo of
me reading out loud at the end of this series.

PPS let me know if you’d like me to visit your child’s class to read E is for Elissa! You can grab your own copy at eisforelissa.com. taken in Temple Sinai DC by @emilygoodstein

Home again, home again… after a wonderful* 3 days in Austin!

@theronkelly, Edie, and I got to see so many friends and spend lots of QT with Auntie @classicbart and Uncle @adamholz, plus cousins Bess and Juni. Edie had the best time playing with a gaggle of kids (some we knew like Jacob Bernay / @dbernay and Bea Dochen / @katiedoch, and some she just befriended at the @central_market playground). And! I hosted an informal #Convio reunion with a bunch of favorites including @hairequalsred, @kathyphantastic, @darcypud, @jaxinatx, @rdejuana, and @cbalusek.

See you again soon, 512!

*the only minor traumatic event occurred as soon as we landed when Edie fell off of a suitcase and hit her head on the cement. We ended up in the ER being cared for by the most child centered radiology tech for a CT scan which showed Edie’s little keppy is fine. 😮‍💨 Never a dull moment. taken in Austin, Texas by @emilygoodstein
