Honoured to be invited to 10 Downing Street today to represent @bookmarkreading and celebrate the power of reading.

Today Secretary of State for Education, Bridget Phillipson, announced that 2026 will be The National Year of Reading.

The National Year of Reading 2026 is a campaign to address the steep decline in reading amongst children, young people and adults.

On behalf of Bookmark Reading Charity, it has been wonderful to be involved in some of the initial discussions for #TheNationalYearOfReading2026 with the National Literacy Trust. I look forward to us playing our part in fostering a love for reading in children. This is to ensure children get the best start in life possible 💥📚. The initiative will reimagine what reading means, making it meaningful and relevant in our fast paced AI driven world.

With 7.1 million adults struggling with reading every day in the United Kingdom, we need to change the national reading culture for good. 👊👊👊

Thank you to Bridget Phillipson and the Department of Education for the invitation. Also it was wonderful to hear such brilliant speeches from #BridgetPhillipson, Jonathan Douglas (CEO of National Literacy Trust and former children’s laureate @cressidacowellauthor.

Thank you @bbcradio4 for inviting me to speak about the UK’s literacy crisis. Bookmark Reading Charity has started the year with its #MindTheGap campaign to spread awareness about the UK’s literacy crisis.

Only 10% of disadvantaged children who fall behind at primary school go on to pass English and Maths GCS.

We are ALL, therefore, needed - please do join us by closing ‘the gap’ and getting involved! 💥Reading with a child for 30 minutes, once a week online or in person, really will change a child’s life story.

The legacy Dolly leaves behind will have a ripple effect like no other. She made sure her fame and fortune improved literacy worldwide with the invention of the @imaginationlibrary scheme that has gone on to gift 330 million books to children. This was inspired by her father not being able to read or write.

Dolly understood something vital: reading isn’t a skill a child automatically learns at school. A lot of it comes down to the ‘will’ to learn that is established at home from when you are a baby and surrounded by your family - the feel of books, pride in owning a book and curiosity about what is written on the pages. The joy of reading needs to be ignited. In one interview, Dolly stated ‘even if you can’t afford to go to college or get a big education, if you can read, you can educate yourself.’ How true this is.

A singer, daughter, wife, philanthropist, song writer, film star, story teller, business woman, legend and so much more. ❤️❤️❤️ There will not be another Dolly but we can all try.…

So thrilled to learn that @bookmarkreading has been shortlisted for The Learning Award at the Children & Young People Now Awards for our One-to-one Reading Programme 🎉📚

This recognition acknowledges and celebrates the incredible impact our volunteers make. Every volunteer helps children to develop the reading skills and confidence they need to thrive in life. 🧡🧡🧡

During the spring term, 18,765 reading sessions were delivered up and down the country. This was a 29% increase year on year for this particular term with every session representing a child taking another step forward in their reading journey. 📚🎉💫💥

Here’s to hoping libraries might (finally) become a statutory requirement in schools as well as prisons… It is AMAZING to see @bookmarkreading’s evidence mentioned in the @ukcommonscommittees’ Reading for Pleasure report 🎉📚💥! This report was published yesterday after a lengthy process of taking evidence and it is a real milestone for Bookmark’s impact evaluation to have been included.

In response to Bookmark’s observations, the following recommendations have been made:

1. Libraries need to be a statutory requirements in SCHOOLs and not just prisons. This needs to change by the end of the next school year which every school having reading spaces in their classrooms and / or a dedicated reading room.

2. Ongoing investment - The Department of Education should introduce a school library development fund to enable schools to refresh their book stock and train staff to ensure maximum impact.

3. Dedicated time for both reading and trips to the library should be a requirement in the school timetable

An exciting development during the #NationalYearOfReading as we reach the midway point. The full report can be found here: https://publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm5902/cmselect/cmeduc/150/report.html

Happy birthday to Queen Camilla 🥂🎂💫🎉. #tb to @bookmarkreading’s volunteers being invited to @clarencehouse to meet Her Majesty The Queen. The most wonderful recognition for our volunteer community for their hard work to change life stories.

Queen Camilla is an important champion of literacy. She is constantly promoting the benefits of reading and raising awareness of the work carried out by charities and prisons to improve life opportunities. 📚💥📚💥📚 This is not just through her own charity @thequeensreadingroom but by also promoting other organisations in the third sector. To mark her birthday, Queen Camilla has announced that all children will receive a copy of @katherine.rundell’s Impossible Creatures when they reach Year 6 or Primary 6 as part of the #NationalYearofReading. 💥📚💫

An incredible 18,765 reading sessions were delivered last term - more than a 29% increase from the same spring term last year! 💥🙌🏼 With #volunteersweek taking place in June, this is the month to say an extra big thank you to volunteers across the United Kingdom and celebrate all that they do.

Thanks to @bookmarkreading’s amazing reading volunteers… 1,850 children received personalised support to boost their reading skills.

1 in 4 children leave primary school unable to read at the expected level and it is heartbreaking to think that only 10% of these children will go on to pass their English and Maths GCSEs. So many doors have closed before these children can even think about applying for a job. The need for @bookmarkreading one-to-one reading programmes in disadvantaged communities is enormous - THANK YOU to everyone who makes these possible.

Possibly my favourite month (and possibly my favourite poem)…. April Theory -

Maybe January was never meant to be the beginning.

Maybe the year starts slowly on purpose-a quiet stretch, a deep inhale, the soft ache of waking up.

Maybe February was shaking off, and March was the gathering of strength, a slow return to ourselves.

And maybe April is when it really begins.

When the light lingers, when our hearts beat louder, when we are truly ready to start again.

Not because we should, but because we’re finally warm enough to want to.

Exciting moment with @hannahgold_author officially joining as a @bookmarkreading Champion. We are so grateful to EVERYONE who supports our charity’s vision and cannot say this enough - we want every child to read.

I was very lucky to be part of a panel with author Hannah Gold and #CBeebies @ben_cajee in January with #thebbconeshow @alexjonesthomson hosting the event. The most wonderful way to raise awareness about the UK’s literacy crisis and how we can all play our part to help fix it.
