October is National Bullying Prevention Month, and this month’s Between Bites episode of Peace Meal explores an important connection: bullying and eating disorder development.

Dr. Jillian Lampert discusses how bullying can contribute to self-doubt, lower self-esteem, body dissatisfaction, dieting, and over-exercising—and how we can all help create a culture of connection and belonging instead.

You may have heard your teen, or someone online, talk about “leanmaxxing.”

So, what does it mean?

Leanmaxxing is a term you may come across in online spaces focused on appearance and body ideals. It generally refers to efforts to become leaner or achieve a particular “lean” physique, often with an emphasis on changing or controlling body size and appearance.

Of course, caring about health and feeling good in your body isn’t inherently concerning. But when efforts to become leaner become rigid, restrictive, or closely tied to worries about body size or appearance, it may be worth taking a closer look at what’s going on.

That’s where knowing the language can help.

As a parent, you don’t need to know every new term your teen encounters online. But understanding some of the language can make it a little easier to ask questions, stay curious, and keep the conversation open.

💬 Not sure what a term means? Try asking:

“I heard this term online. What does it mean to you?”

We’re proud to see The Emily Program’s work in ARFID care featured in @NatGeo. 🧡

ARFID – Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder – is so much more than “picky eating.” It’s a serious eating disorder that can affect people of all ages and body sizes, and it can have significant physical, emotional, and social impacts.

The article, “When Picky Eating is Actually a Psychiatric Disorder,” shines an important light on ARFID and the need for specialized, compassionate treatment.

Our Adult ARFID Center of Excellence in Durham, North Carolina, is proud to be part of that conversation. As the country’s first inpatient treatment program dedicated solely to ARFID, our team provides specialized care that addresses the unique barriers people experience with eating – including sensory sensitivities, fear-based avoidance, and lack of interest in food.

Treatment at our center incorporates evidence-based approaches including CBT-AR, DBT, somatic therapy, nutrition education, mindfulness, and therapeutic meals – all with the goal of helping people move toward a life with greater freedom and flexibility around food.

We’re grateful to National Geographic for helping bring greater awareness to ARFID and, most importantly, to the people living with it. ARFID is real. ARFID is treatable. And people deserve care that understands the difference.

Please note: The full story is available to National Geographic subscribers. Read the full story via the link in our bio.
