365 days.

I don’t think there will ever be a way to put into words what it feels like to say that. It’s been a whole year since I lost my dad, and somehow life has continued to move forward.

The world kept spinning. People went to work, celebrated birthdays, made memories, laughed, and went on with their lives. But for a while, it felt like my entire world had stopped. Everything around me kept moving while mine completely crumbled.

He was taken from us far too soon. There are so many things I wish he was still here for. So many moments I wish I could call him, tell him about, or just have him there for. I still catch myself wishing I could have one more conversation, one more hug, one more regular day with him.

The effects of police misconduct don’t end when the headlines fade or the initial shock wears off. The consequences of one deputy’s careless decision will stay with our family for years, changing the way we grieve, the way we trust, and the way we move through everyday life. Behind every incident is a family left to carry the emotional weight long after everyone else has moved on.

365 days later, and I still miss him every single day. I don’t think that part will ever change. I’ve just had to learn how to keep living while carrying the weight of losing him. by @emilyy.se
