I got a new job! ✨

Some of you may have already seen this announcement on LinkedIn but I’m absolutely THRILLED to announce a few weeks back I joined @intnight as a concept artist.

I’ve always been passionate about games and I won’t lie it’s been such a rollercoaster ride trying to properly break into the games industry whilst navigating such an unsteady, unpredictable job market. I’ve absolutely loved every second of being a freelance artist but I’m definitely excited to have my feet firmly placed in one place for a bit.

These guys are seriously talented so very honoured to have joined the crew. Watch this space!

I’ve had a few new followers here and I guess things have changed a little since last year when I was posting more so thought it was a good time to introduce myself to the new folks and reintroduce myself to those of you who know me already.

I’d seen carousels like these floating around and felt inspired to create one of my own!

Thanks for being here 🫶🏼

Everyone’s favourite Mayor.

I don’t know about you but I’ve absolutely loved watching Widows Bay - I don’t often paint fan art but I’ve had this idea swimming around in my head for a few days and knew I had to quickly paint it up to celebrate the finale.

@katiedippold / @muraihiro thanks for giving us all our new favourite show.

The @little__nightmares Backstage DLC is out and I’m thrilled to announce this was part of one of the many fun things I got to do during my time working with the awesome @supermassivegames team!

I was initially hired as a character concept artist and was quite heavily involved in concepting our new little friend, Dime! I came on quite early in the project to help with clothing, hair, hats and outfits, to name a few! It’s amazing to see some of my early ideas stuck and made it through to her final look. I’m so proud of this, my first involvement with a ‘main’ character in a game 💡

Congrats to everyone at Supermassive and Bandai for the release.

If you’re playing the DLC I hope you love it and I hope you love Dime! Can’t wait for people to experience more Secrets of the Spiral 👀 by @emloha

7 years in.

Some days it’s just showing up, some days I feel like I’m still figuring it out. Either way I’m grateful for this crazy industry and boy have I learnt a thing or two.

I get asked a lot about working as a concept artist in film and video games and I figured it’s time to share some little lessons I’ve learnt over the years.

Thoughts below ⬇️
——

✨ Sometimes success DOES happen overnight. Be present, post your art and make your presence known because you never know who’s watching.

✨ Bigger isn’t always better. Some of the most rewarding projects I’ve ever worked on have been with smaller companies. Give them a chance and you’ll be part of a great team.

✨ Know when to ask for help. It’s not a sign of weakness if you don’t know how to do something. Don’t suffer in silence and especially don’t try and lie about the time you need for a deadline.

✨ Being a good team player is just as important as your portfolio. Fact.

✨ Networking isn’t just important, it’s a necessity. Go to events. Talk to people, don’t avoid LinkedIn and don’t be afraid.

✨ Most artists love talking about themselves (sorry it’s true) so if you’re ever afraid to approach someone remember they also love art too. You already have a mutual ground.

✨ If you want to message art directors or studio heads, keep it brief. It isn’t personal, people are just busy and short snappy messages are just better.

✨ If at first you don’t succeed, try again. There’s no right way in and sometimes it does take time.

✨ You CAN get a job with zero experience. I got my first ever VFX industry job straight out of working retail. With enough determination and passion you can do it too.

✨ Discipline will always beat motivation.

A little collection of recent sketches ✏️

I’ve not had a huge amount of time for personal art lately so been really fond of doing some quick sketches whenever I get a moment. I’ve been going frequently to our local @_sketchbooksessions this year which is the perfect excuse to do these! Finished a few of these at last nights session, always a lovely time.

Drawn in @procreate ✨

It’s been a while.
I realise posting this already so late into January probably isn’t great social media form but I’m trying to show up more without putting pressure on myself to feed the social media machine. I think I stopped posting altogether because of that constant pressure and most of what I was making didn’t feel like me.

2025 was full of memories and its taken me a long time to figure out how to summarise it into a short caption and an even shorter clip. Last year tested me in ways I never expected. Some months were heavy and wiped me off my feet whilst others gently put me back together again.

Last year started rough. Redundancy number two on my first day back at work. Thrown back into freelancing in an already unsteady industry but I’d been here before so that sense of resilience crept back in along with a determination to make it work. Little did I know it would become my best freelancing year yet and the beginning of some incredible collaborations both personal and professional. It truly felt like the year I grew the most as an artist.

The middle of the year brought working with some incredible new clients and I completed my first large physical art project. It still feels surreal knowing my work now sits in a museum on the other side of the world and hopefully I can share more on that at some point...

By the end of the year I decided to face things I’d been carrying for a long time. I took a plunge and travelled across the world and reconnected with myself in ways I’ll never forget. That trip genuinely altered my brain chemistry and being able to take that time is something I’ll always be grateful for.

I’m entering 2026 feeling more like myself than I have in a long time and feel grateful to be here creating again with a new mindset. I hope this year leads to me sharing more of my life here both artistically and personally.
If you’ve made it through a hard year too just know I see you and it’s never too late to start again. Thank you if you’ve read this far and if you’ve supported me in any way, it genuinely means a lot.

Taking a break from sharing studies to share some of my video game work!

It's always difficult to share what's going on behind the scenes as so much of the work you do as a concept artist is often locked behind an NDA - thankfully in this case I can share some stuff I did for Dream Harvest Games at the end of last year.

I worked on a bit of a variety as I was brought on as a generalist for this so my role involved everything from concept to UI design. I was responsible for designing a few environments (and began exploring UI design for the game which you can see in some later slides). This scene was for our 'kiosk' environment in which the main protagonist Charles is on the hunt for some information for a missing person.

We typically started out with really rough sketches (scroll to the end for some wips), then built pretty detailed environments and tried to keep the paintover very limited at the end. We were aiming to create a blend of painterly / high detail 3D so we had to be careful with how much we ended up painting over as we needed to be able to translate this into 3D without losing the painterly touches. The intention was to create hand painted textures so it was a really fun project to test out a few different workflows to create the desired effects.

Unfortunately this project was cancelled (and the studio shut down in January) but it was such a cool experience and an amazing opportunity to explore a genre / style of game I really wanted to work on.

Can you guess which games inspired this project? 👀

I'll be updating my Artstation with all of this work at a later date so be sure to give me a follow to see in full! artstation.com/emloha ✨

A tiny snippet of just one of the many things I’ve created in a whole month of using the new @wacom Cintiq Pro 22in. Needless to say, I’m in loveeeee with it.

I upgraded my work set up a bit as a little birthday treat to myself and so far have zero regrets. Such a beautiful tablet to work on and I love how it feels to draw.

Of course (aside from work) one of the first things I decided to draw was a still life study. They’re genuinely one of the best things for practicing colour and light - which is something I struggled with for way too long before doing them. I always wanted to try and translate a sort of painterly feel into my digital (as I oil paint too) and feel like my art has improved tenfold since doing these and I’m slowly starting to suss out my style and the way I love to paint. Also thanks to the @jamesgurneyart ‘Color and Light’ book, that is an absolute must have if you’re learning about art.

What’s your go-to subject for practicing? Any great book suggestions for learning how to draw / paint? 🍐
