My birthday was on a Tuesday which means i was at the open mic jazz jam @thegrapeventura
Precisely a year prior on my birthday i signed a lease to move into an apartment in Ventura and begin living and working here. I had no idea what was in Ventura besides the jazz bar, but i knew if there was good music i would survive. I started singing consistently in January of this year, and last week was my first time finally bringing a chart for the house band to read instead of picking a standard tune. (I love A Long Walk by Jill Scott.) This place has been a gateway into the music scene and it’s totally opened up my world and expanded my community here in ways i didn’t even know was possible. I am so grateful to everyone at The Grape, the people who run it, the bartenders, the house band, the musicians, the regular audience members. It was very special that I got to celebrate my one year ventura anniversary with you all. 💜 by @emma8b

Before there was dilemma production co., there was a potluck at Art City on Sunday nights. @emma8b was in attendance one summer evening and overheard that they needed help finding bands to play at the annual Summer Solstice party. She offered to volunteer for entertainment recruitment and immediately hired the jazz combo that she had recently joined, to headline the event. Some may call this “corrupção”.

In addition to the bands, she recruited dancers @prettylittledancer410 and @supernova_celeste from @rocknpole_studio to elevate the summer vibes with incredible pole performances.

@artcity.studios Summer Solstice party 2026 ended up being a fantastic night of funk music and dancing. dilemma production co. was still barely conceived, but the pieces were being placed on the board.

HEY GUYS!!! IM HELPING PUT ON THIS AMAZING LOCAL MUSIC EVENT HERE IN VENTURA!!!! Listen up: Classical music can be daunting to approach and participate in, especially for those of us who are excluded from historical narratives and underrepresented on stage. It’s hard to grapple with the history of racism and misogyny that feels embedded in the culture.

Even so, classical music has been shaped by diversity, community, and innovation for centuries. In this program featuring works by our friends Sophia Ahmad and Justice Claveria and pieces by Florence Price and Jessie Montgomery, we’ll celebrate the voices of people of color who define the sound of American classical music.

We’ll close out the night with a set by Chicano dreampop band Maria. We can’t wait to share this evening with you!
