@eliseseigenthalergallery:
ā€œNo Such Thingā€ brings together a series of works that consider the idea of perfection through the lens of portraiture and material process.
Ā
Shot over the course of three years, this series of work represents Anderson’s desire to shift away from the clean, intentional, and manicured visual language that had come to define his photography. Each image grew from a conversation with the subject about the role of perfection in their creative practice, which expanded into questions of self-image, lived experience, and personal understanding of what constitutes perfection, how it shapes our relationship to the act of existing. Excerpts from the conversations accompany the photographs in a zine, bringing the multiplicity of Anderson’s subjects’ perspectives into relation with his images.
Ā
The material qualities of each photograph are central to the exhibition. Rather than meticulously controlling every element of the photographic and development process, Anderson has allowed the unpredictability and imperfections inherent to working with film fold in to the rich beauty of his imagery. Erratic scratch marks, dust, and squiggles dance across the surface of certain photographs while in others ghostly, shimmering rays of white light envelop the subjects. Faint, spectral shapes irregularly dot the images, imbuing them with a textural depth that complicates any expectation that a photograph should feel impeccably neat and fully resolved. Rather than treating these effects as flaws, Anderson embraces each unexpected mark or blemish and incorporates it into the finished image, reflecting his interest in the space between intention and accident.

The gals take flight again!

Read all about our trip to Milwaukee for @chicago_reader

ā€œIn a city that gets called regional, the temptation is to protect the local scene by turning inward. Milwaukee does the opposite: global partnership strengthens the local scene, because once a Milwaukee artist is seen in Tokyo, Milwaukee sees that artist differently, and Tokyo sees Milwaukee differently too. For instance, the Beer Endowment funds XYZ Collective in Tokyo alongside Poor Farm and Friends of Fred Smith while Sculpture Milwaukee marks its tenth anniversary this year by leaning into collaboration, with Baltic and Japanese partners lined up. And at @milwaukeeart Margaret Andera builds patronage between Milwaukee and Chicago, acquiring with the whole midwestern ecosystem in mind. This type of collaboration recontextualizes the local rather than competing with it—another way of saying it makes the local visible, changing both how Milwaukee sees itself and how the world sees it.ā€

Missives from the Midwest: Detroit in 24 Hours with Abby Pucker, Chanelle Lacy and Emma McKee

@chicago_reader

Welcome to the first installment of Flyover Gals āœˆļø Follow along as we visit some of the cultural hotbeds of the country located right in our backyard in the midwest.

We’ve all been sitting with the same question: We’re the third-largest metro in the country, so why do we so often act like a provincial city? Chicago is a world-class arts city. And yet this sentiment persists.

We have the scale, the institutions, the creative energy. What we need is belief in ourselves. A scarcity mindset tells us there isn’t enough room, recognition, or relevance to go around, so we hoard, compete, and look elsewhere for validation. An abundance mindset does the opposite: It compounds. The more we champion each other, the more legitimacy we collectively build. Confidence is contagious, and it’s also a signal.

That confidence shouldn’t stop at the city limits.

The midwest is full of cities that are even more overlooked than we are, but have just as much to celebrate. We want to view the other places in the region as an extension of our strength—not as competition, but part of our larger context.

Detroit was the obvious city to highlight first. With EXPO Chicago upon us, we thought it would be good to visit some of the artists, galleries, and collectors that are descending upon our fair city.
