As many of you know, I had the incredible opportunity through @uwnursing and @iapstudyabroad to travel to Malawi for 2 weeks to learn about their healthcare system and public health and immerse myself in a different culture if only for a brief period of time. It is impossible to express everything we saw but this trip has truly had such an impact on me and the kind of nurse I want to be.

USAID is a government agency that "supports country-led efforts to combat the complex challenges of HIV in over 50 countries around the world" among other global health efforts, and aims to end HIV as a public health crisis by 2030. Currently, the USAID government website only shows a notice that almost all employees have been placed on administrative leave as of February of this year. They work to test for, treat, and stop the spread of TB, increase access to PrEP, prevent vertical HIV transmission, allow for varied and specific treatment plans, and provide comprehensive family planning, among countless other services. Having people look you in the eye and tell you how the instability of USAID funding has hurt their efforts to continue fighting HIV/AIDs and providing essential services to patients feels like a punch to the gut. How are you supposed to just stand there and say you wish it wasn't happening and agree that our country isn't just hurting itself but also people across the globe? How do you interact with patients traveling hours for care and kids who will spend their whole lives on medication and accept that they may lose access to lifesaving care?
